3. Strategy: the four keys
Enlarge this video to full screen by rolling over the bottom of the video frame, then click or tap on the four-corner icon at the far right of the toolbar. When this video is finished, click or tap on the blue Mark Complete button below to move on to the next step (if it’s gray, finish watching the video). If there is no button, you choose another topic from the list on the left.
We have four major keys that we’ve built all the classes around. Knowing these, and keeping them in mind, has guided our creation of this curriculum.
The art
The art is the actual voice work itself: commercials, narration, audiobooks, animation, video games, etc. It’s where most of the schools and coaches around the world concentrate their teaching.
But it’s not all there is to a successful voice over practice.
Not by a long shot.
The commerce
To be successful, you not only have to be a talented voice over performer, executing the art to the best of your ability, but you also have to understand what it takes to run an entrepreneurial concern: your voice over practice. That’s where the commerce we teach comes in.
The science
The science is the technology you need to understand to make your work easy and efficient. The gear you use, the sites you frequent, the recording and editing and so on. It’s no longer a thing to simply say, “Computers and I don’t get along.”
The mindset
This one is huge, and it’s one that we really concentrate on throughout the entire curriculum: how your mind works when it comes to this sometimes really confusing and frustrating pursuit we’ve chosen for our professional lives. Our job is to make sure you can handle all the chatter that can run through your head, and reframe it to make it work for you, in the most useful and satisfying way you can.
So…
…let’s put these strategies into play, by using some very specific tactics (tools, processes, etc.) that will help us get clarity on our future success. Onward.
