13283: The One Question You Can Ask That Just Might Make Someone Love You

Hey there, hero!

Everybody loves baseball. And the language of baseball is part of cultures around the world.

And over the course of time, I’ve settled on one question when I’m trying to serve a client, a peer, an affiliate, a family member or just a friend who needs my support.

More often than not, they react with surprise and delight, and proceed to answer the question with depth and detail.

They love this baseball-inspired request. Watch or listen to this episode to hear this simple question, and see if some version of it might work for you.

(And for those of you in, say, the UK or India or Australia…I’m sure you can create a futbol or cricket equivalent.)

What do you use when you want to find out how your help is needed? How do you dig deep into someone’s needs when they ask for help? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. I like this question. I can see how it would open a dialogue that helps the asker get to the root of what they really want to know.
    Thank you, David.

  2. I love this, and, turning this around 180 degrees, I’m definitely going to keep this in mind the next time I’m asking a complex question that I really want a good answer to. “What would be the best possible outcome for me if I got a great answer? What would help me the most?” That clarity would be so helpful in keeping me from getting stuck in generalities and crafting a question that will get me the specific answer/help I need. I’m going to remember this!

  3. This podcast continues to be a home run for my growth as a human because it is short yet packed with helpful tidbits that span multiple areas of life.

  4. Hello David, a home run for me would be to have a special session with you to nail down using Audacity to audition for and produce audio books.
