13282: Do Not Fear Rejection. Instead, Fear Regret.
Hey there, hero!
The title of this podcast episode comes from the words of author Michelle Rozen (not Rozer, as I misspoke at the beginning of the podcast), who wrote The 6%, a book on high achievers.
And when I heard it, it struck me that we kinda face this dilemma all. the. time.
We can worry that no one wants to see or hear or read what we’ve created.
And that can stop the effort to create…dead in its tracks.
How do you approach the act of creation? With an eye toward whether people will pay any attention at all? Or from the learning we experience, good or bad, from simply giving it a go? Let me know in the comments below.

The author Michelle Rozen (NOT ROZER) said something
on the YouTube the other day that I saw
that I heard that I thought was really
interesting. She said, “Do not fear
rejection,
rather do fear regret.”
And that sent me off for a deep dive on
trying new things. So, let’s talk about
that, you creative person, in this
episode of the VO Heroes podcast.
Everything we do when we start to create
something new in our lives, a new piece
of audio, a new piece of video, uh a new
piece of writing,
it’s almost as if we’re daring the
universe to reject us, right? I didn’t
like that. That was a piece of crap. No,
he doesn’t know how to write. She
doesn’t know how to talk. She’s thinks,
here’s the thing. That can debilitate
you. That can stop you dead in your
tracks. Do I want that kind of
rejection? Do I want to hear people say
no? Well, here’s the thing.
If you stop yourself and remove the
risk, that’s safer, but it also could
lead
to not getting something in the future.
you know, uh, so many times I’ve seen
people try something, fail at it, and
then succeed at it later because of what
they learned when they failed. This is a
common theme that we talk about here on
the show. But I wouldn’t let a a no ruin
a future yes or even a potential no. I’m
not going to watch that. No, I’m not
going to listen to that. No, I’m not
going to read that.
You never know what things are going to
lead to other things, whether they’re
positive or negative.
And what I would say to you is let that
possibility,
let that possibility
be a flame
that potentially can fuel a future
success, even if this one doesn’t work.
You know, and I’m not telling those of
you who are used to this sort of thing
when you’re looking at that lump of
clay, what am I going to do with this?
How am I going to approach this audition
for an on camera gig? How am I going to
go after that commercial or that audio
book or how am I going to write that
article or that that novel that I’m I’m
looking to do? Ah, do I really want to
put myself through that? I would urge
you to lean toward yes even if it turns
out
didn’t quite work out because the
lessons we take away from that could be
useful in the future. Just give yourself
a chance. Give yourself a chance.
Do not fear rejection.
Fear the regret of not having tried.
Thank you, Michelle. I appreciate that.
Tell me what your thoughts are on this.
I’d love to know. Uh if you’re on

episode, jump down to the comments. Tell
me what you think about what you’re
hearing. Is it tough for you to overcome
that initial fear of trying something
new or does it matter to you whether you
succeed or not? Tell me. Tell me your
thoughts. Uh on vioheres.com, the
conversation is sane and polite and
nobody’s yelling at each other. We love

succeed. And guess what? It might

Yes yes yes and YES! This really resonated with me. Try it! If I fail, they’re not going to put me in jail. I’m just going to learn something. And…. I might succeed! Love it. Thank you!
Thanks as always for the Inspiration!!!! Inspiration today is to write!!!!
Thanks for the inspiration!!!
I have often had conversations with myself about whether to risk or not. And when I do, I remind myself that no one has ever gone into any venture saying, “This is going to be the biggest mistake I ever made!” An old friend of mine pointed this out to me years ago and then he said stop thinking of it as a mistake and think of it as a learning. I know I learn as much (and often more) from not being selected as I do when I’m selected. And then I jump in. Although it sometimes takes me some time to get the learning, I always do get it. And I’m grateful for it.
Staying in the game, coach, because there are yeses waiting for me while brushing past the nos.
Give yourself a chance, and use failure to evolve.
