The CD Isn’t There To Lead You To The Answer

Hey there, hero!

I just had a lovely conversation with an actor friend, and we were talking about the self-tape revolution, and its pros and cons.

And one of the cons is that there’s no chance for a conversation with the CD, about your choices, while auditioning.

I think there’s a danger in mistaking that conversation for more than what it is.

Hope this helps!

  1. More and more, I see how this whole game (as many others in life!) is about managing expectations. In this case, I mean the *actor* managing *his own* expectations; the CD presumably already knows the game.

There’s nothing like experience. Thanks for sharing yours!

  2. Super relevant. Was just talking about this with a fellow actor. I came from training when I was younger that encouraged actors to seek feedback for growth. Its so helpful to adjust my expectations when it comes to audition vids sent in. I like your push to give our bold choices up front vs. timid auditions that depend on adjustments after. There will not BE an AFTER in most cases so be bold now! Yup. Good stuff and not the first time you have coached this. I know this for VO but forgot it for on camera. Thanks for the mindset adjustment!

  3. Interesting – it seems like this ties into the mantra of ‘be your own true self’. I can see why it could be a tense situation, trying to figure out if you should show that you’re capable of taking direction, or whether you’d worry that you’ve gone far from what they wanted because you took a guess…and it’s not the Casting Director’s responsibility! Thanks for this insight. 🙂
