Don’t Want To Toot Your Own Horn?
Hey there, hero!
At WOVOCon a few weeks ago, I met with a lovely voice over talent from the UK.
Being from the UK, she was incredibly polite, shy and very very concerned about tooting her own horn…and we had a chat about that. Maybe you might relate.

Hope this helps!

hey there hero it’s David H Lawrence the
17th before I get to the subject matter
of today’s today’s video I wanted to let
you know that earlier this week dan and
I Dano day and I sent out an email
saying hey we’re gonna be doing the ACX
master class again in February but we
wanted to give people advance notice of
that and Dan went one step further and
created this very cool
once a month for four months payment
plan that has no interest no additional
fees and it’s guaranteed to be the
lowest price that we charge for the
class which is going to be sixteen
ninety five and so the monthly fee turns
out to be like four twenty three seventy
five or something like that over the
next four months and then your last
payment is the day we start class which
is kind of cool I mean I did not expect
Dan to do that but he did so I’ve got a
link for you in the show notes for this
video and also below as a as a title
it’s a CX master class dot-com slash
advanced – 2020 and me just saying that
is me trying to say look if you know you
want to do audiobooks you want to do
audio book narration you want to build a
business on a CX if I can be of service
for you then I want to tell you about
this opportunity it’s not me selling and
feeling kind of dirty about selling
something that I produce with my partner
Dan it is me saying look I want you to
be successful and if I can help you in
doing that and my content is something
that you find valuable we’ve got a
really cool way for you to do that that
all ties in to the video for today
because a couple weeks ago when I was at
wove o con in Las Vegas which was
awesome thank you world organization –
voiceover talent I met a woman
lovely older woman voice-over talent
from the UK who has been doing it for a
while
but because she’s from the UK she just
you know here’s how it happened we’re
all sitting at lunch and she goes I just
don’t feel good about putting up a
trailer for my latest audio book I just
don’t I just think it’s it’s Tooting my
own horn I don’t like doing that and I
immediately thought to myself okay
you’re a performer you make demos you go
out for auditions you try to get
bookings but you don’t want to toot your
own horn and that’s not uncommon I mean
maybe you feel like that you know just
because performers belt out songs and
tell jokes and are boisterous when
they’re onstage doesn’t mean that some
of them aren’t introverted many of them
are introverted and it also doesn’t mean
that some of them aren’t raised by
parents to reward quiet reward being
reserved reward being polite not making
too much noise not and that’s exactly
what I found out when I had a
conversation with her afterwards because
I said at lunch I’m like – your own horn
all you’re doing is telling the world
that you’ve completed this project and
maybe they’d like to see it there’s a
different there’s a different approach –
I don’t remember the exact words that I
said but it made a change and it made a
shift for her and it was of the the the
ilk of being of service right so it
wasn’t hey look at me I’m so awesome
right when I told you about the for
payment plan for a CX masterclass at the
beginning of the video
it wasn’t hey look at me I’ve got an a
CX master class isn’t it cool and I want
to take your money and I’ll take it in
for chunks you know what it was was look
if you need help with cash flow and you
know that this class is valuable and you
want to be an audiobook narrator here’s
an opportunity for you it changes just
slightly the framework of Tooting your
own horn
being of service to your audience
telling a great story giving them
something of value
and when I talked to her about it she
said well you know I was raised by
affair by a father who didn’t want me to
do that and you know I get it I get it
there are environmental issues there are
behavioral issues there are emotional
issues there are social issues around
how loud we are about ourselves I mean
I’m sure there are an awful lot of
talent that could never sit down and do
a video like this they just would be
horrified that people would see their
face and so that’s one thing and you
know if there’s anybody that should be
horrified about people seeing their face
it’s me but you know I’m that’s that’s
not the way I am it was at one point I
was very very shy when I was really
little when I was a little kid I was
really really shy used to hide behind my
mom’s legs and and you know when people
would say hi to me I’d go hi you know
that’s not me today is it no it isn’t
and I think things change over time and
usually it changes when you can shift
your perspective on what it is that is
making you think that right it all goes
back to these limiting beliefs that get
built when were kids and for her the
limiting belief was you must be quiet I
must be quiet
I must not toot my own horn I must not
be braggadocio I must not have
braggadocio much not be painting a
wonderful picture about myself because
that’s untoward right so what I would
ask you is tell me in the comments
either a yeah I I don’t have a problem
with this I can tell people what’s
happening in my performance career no
problem or B I do have a problem with it
but I fixed it and here’s how I fixed it
meaning here’s how I changed my
perception about it or c d e f g h
whatever i can’t do this i really can’t
do this and let’s start a conversation
let’s find out what it is because what’s
happening is if you can’t quote toot
your own horn your your
you’re unfortunately you’re you’re
telling the world nothing about what
you’re doing and that’s a disservice to
the world there’s a part of me that
wants to say how dare you not share with
the world
your awesomesauce you know it’s it’s
it’s again a different shift but when
you don’t do your own horn because
you’re afraid of sounding like you’re
bragging or your humble bragging what
you’re doing is you’re telling the world
yeah I don’t think I’m worth you knowing
about me so don’t worry about it
and that is unfair to them so tell me in
the comments below how where you are on
this spectrum of yeah I’m fine with that
or I’m not but I’m working on it or I
just I can’t tell me where you are at
comments below on vo heroes com I’d love
to know if you want to be on my list I’d
love to have you on my mailing list
please let me know by joining the get on
the list form downstairs downstairs
below the video at the bottom of the
page I’ll get it
just fill that out and you’ll be on the
list you’ll know when these videos come
out I’m gonna do a new one every day for
the rest of the year as we as we as we
earn out this challenge it’s gonna be
great I’m David H Lawrence 17th I thank
you so much for watching don’t forget
today’s the last day that you can take
advantage of the four payment plan for a
sex masterclass 2020 and the link again
is a CX masterclass com slash advance –
2020 I’ll put it in the notes below I
thank you so much for watching and I
will talk to you tomorrow .
Thank you!
Great video. I am often concerned that people may view my telling of my latest accomplishment as bragging, or on the other hand, insignificant compared to what others in my field have done. But a better perspective is to show what I have done to simply inform people that this is what I do. Then maybe I can help someone else who could use my services.
I’ll keep it short. My first radio job was for a privately owned, NY-market, 37KW ERP FM station, that had a big anniversary celebration (50 years in the 1980s!). At a big gathering of the faithful (a few hundred people in a big auditorium, plus the broadcast audience) the station manager made reference to a new on-air voice that he really appreciated, and which he knew would prefer to remain nameless. He was right! I was most comfortable operating “behind the scenes.” Today, I still prefer to be quietly performing unseen, but I do recognize the need for some self-promotion; but it doesn’t come naturally. Many people I’ve worked with even in corporate jobs over the years have told me I need to do more of it!
aaahhh.. radio…the sweet blanket of anonymity… Later in this life i developed the skill of holding an audience of 200+ , with minimal walkouts, for an hour at a time. Just me and a mic… As an introvert, it was misery. But, no-speaky, no money…
It is a great point that, for this tribe – that we all need to do some promotion. or wither on the vine… for me, it is baby steps…even with all my accomplishments. I find a “promotion mentor” has been crucial as a buffer between my irrational fears, and the successful use of the very powerful tools we have at our fingertips. Power should be used carefully – ask kevin hart… Impostor syndrome abounds! Walk into the light! Be the best you can be for your clients, and the rest will follow…( thanks DHLVII. great topic).
As a Brit, I emphasize with her! I was brought up not to boast about my accomplishments, to let others do that, and I still find it hard to publicize my audiobook work. I’ve also discovered that my ‘BBC’ English voice is either received as enjoyable or snooty to listen to!! One listener/reviewer recently wrote in no uncertain terms that I had to stop talking down as if I were speaking to children! Ah well, can’t win them all!
I’m working on this. In fact, I did this successfully just last night about a recent project I completed. This does not come naturally and I find it easier to do if I know that it is something they would actually be interested in whether or not I’m involved. It was well received though, and I was then asked if I had other projects as well. I’ll keep working on this. It is still difficult.
You *really* made me think about how I am approaching my creative career, David. So, I will do my best to shift from it being a DIS-service if I’m NOT sharing my successes. That will be a tough one, but with this video, I feel like it’s a necessary change I must make. THANK YOU.
I’m learning how to promote. It is hard to want to shine because I’ve always gotten the message to hold back and not shine. I’m working on it daily. I’m also trimming the fat and removing those that are not supportive. That energy can crush your soul.
