Who Do You Want To Be A Hero To?
Hey there, hero!
Legendary business coach Dan Sullivan asks this question all the time of his clients:
“Who do you want to be a hero to?”
I know who I want to be a hero to, and I know who I want to train my clients to be heroic for.
But I wonder if that’s what YOU want.
Watch this, and then let me know in the comments below.
Hope this helps!

well hey there hero it’s David H
Lawrence the 17th and I just got back
from teaching a getting started in
voiceover class to a group of Union
actors who are already doing on-camera
work and want to add voiceover to their
portfolio of opportunities and what I
loved about that session it was about
two hours long and it was great because
the questions that they asked made me
feel like they were on the right track
they made me feel like they weren’t
worried about the wrong things they were
worried about the right things and one
of the questions that I asked them was
as an actor as a voice-over talent who
do you want to be a hero to do you want
to be a hero to your audience do you
want to be a hero to your family do you
want to be a hero to your agent do you
want to be a hero to your manager do you
want to be a hero to voiceover clients do you want to be a
hero to your peers helping them there
are so many choices that we have to make
and I thought I’d talk about that
because I made a choice about who I
wanted to be a hero – it was kind of all
those things right in terms of VO heroes
I hope that my clients choose to work
hard toward being heroes to their
clients
the whole notion of the people around
you having faith that you know what
you’re doing that you can handle things
that you can get things going you can
get things moving those are those are
the choices that we often kind of blow
right by when we’re deciding oh I want
to be a talent I want to be an actor I
want to be in the in the business
somebody is looking for you to solve
their problems somebody is looking for
you to be the resource
they can call on both in an emergency
and just casually they want you to be
the one that they can rely on to get the
job done they don’t have to worry about
you they don’t have to mind you they
don’t have to ride herd on you you got
this for them you got this on their
behalf you care enough about what
they’re trying to get accomplished
believe me they will look at you as a
hero and you know if you decide it’s my
family I’ve got to support my family
I’ve got
you know kids to feed and I’ve got a
house to pay for and all that you know I
don’t have that anymore and I’m pretty
well taken care of so I can pay
attention to the idea of being a hero to
my clients so my question for you is who
do you want to be a hero to who do you
want to think of you as heroic who do
you want to look at you as someone who
can help them save them solve their
problems be the one that figures it out
I’ve got so many heroes in my life
my crews are my heroes Steve and steena
are my heroes my clients are my heroes
and my students are my heroes and I hope
I can return the favor I wonder who you
look at as heroes and who you want to be
a hero to it’s a question worth asking
don’t you think it’s question worth
asking let me know in the comments below
this video I’d love to find out what you
think and if you want to be on my list
I’d love to have you on the list as well
as we head into the new year
we’re shooting these videos one a day
for the whole year and you may come upon
this video at some point in the future
and go what what are you talking about
yesterday tomorrow whatever that’s what
we did in 2019 we did a new video
everyday I’m David H Lawrence the 17th I
thank you so much for watching and I
will talk to you tomorrow.
This was a good point today! I know I want to be a hero for the RH for my audiobooks but I had not thought about that when thinking about acting. Thank you David, this videos are such good nuggets of wisdom!
Mr. DHL XVII….I give you a ‘Right On’ for this video!
At first your question sounded somewhat cosmic, but after your first few lines it clicked right in.
I have been a “hero” to any client who has hired me more than once without asking for another audition, which is always gratifying. And in the professional sense, as you mentioned, we VO’s are truly ‘heroes’ to copywriters and advertisers looking for the right voice/delivery (as long as we book the gig, of course), as well as the agents and casting directors who submit our name for gigs only because they believe we can deliver.
And I now realize I have waaaay too much to add, so I’ll just stop now. Thank you, David.
Oh, such a great question! Fantastic video.
