Ever Notice The Type You Get Jealous Of?

Hey there, hero!

I wonder if you’re like me…that occasionally, you might find yourself with little pangs of jealousy when someone in your circle enjoys a big win.

It doesn’t happen to me very often, but it pops up every now and then.

When it does happen, you might take a look at the characteristics of that successful person. You might be surprised at how helpful knowing what those characteristics can be.

Hope this helps!

  1. This is such a compelling topic, David. I can think of two associates of mine, similar to me in type, both of whom have had significant recent success. One of these men is a sweet, generous, wonderful actor, who is currently doing a phenomenal project that will take him through at least the rest of this year. I revel in his success! the other has been a long-time friend and associate, who is also on a roll right now. This latter individual tends to undercut others (myself included) by dropping casually hurtful remarks in front of our peers and others who may be in a position to hire. In addition, our conversations usually degenerate into monologues about his successes (or rationalizations for his not booking a job, his conflicts with others, etc.). And I must admit that I do, at times, get jealous of him. When jealousy rears its head I think to myself, “Do I really want what he has? And at what price?” It is SO important to maintain perspective, in our line of work, and in life…

  2. There’s a practical, spiritual expression that alludes to the concept usefully: We are repelled by those who have qualities we’re not comfortable with in ourselves and we are attracted to people whose characteristics we’d like to have. Reflection of our reactions to these “mirrors” that appear throughout our lives, can activate our ability to refine our own character and greatly enjoy the benefits from those changes. To recognize and simply drop what we object to and cultivate what we admire, is both a conscious and strategic way to achieve our goals. I encourage everyone in our VO community to take David’s advice to heart and become more like the people who are having the successes you’d also like to enjoy. It’s such a useful concept.

  3. Yes!!! “Returns the center of my attention to a more productive, more positive place.” I find that when those energies pop up I must work on my mind quickly. It is great if others in your peer group move forward because that means you can do the same. It isn’t so great to go down the dark and dirty road of ripping them and/or you up about it. For me, it’s all about how I’m looking at it. Why does it trigger those feelings? Is there something missing from my journey that is making me feel that way? For me, it is mind over matter. If you don’t mind it doesn’t matter.
