Avoid The Struggle Porn

Hey there!

We all yearn for success, and if we’re smart, we try to aim for improving our working lives to get to that successful point.

Often it’s a struggle. And that struggle can be lionized by those who have found their way to a successful station in life.

But sometimes, we get caught up in admiring the struggle. Envying the struggle. Wishing we had some more struggle. I call that “struggle porn.”

Here’s how to avoid it.

hey there, it’s David H Lawrence the 17th, and if
You’re anything like me?
You want success you want to?
Move on a regular basis toward success away from failure.
And sometimes you’ll encounter.
the struggle
It’s a struggle. It’s a struggle that can be.
Lionize it can be, you know, almost deified.
By others by articles we read by, you know videos that we’ve seen people.
That become very well known for overcoming the struggle.
And then there were people that say look if you’re not struggling.
Then you’re not really moving towards success.
and when I hear things like that that kind of edges into the space of
worshipping the struggle as opposed to worshipping
the process of
Getting better not necessarily doing so under duress.
In fact, I call things like that and I’ve been laughed at for this but I called things like that struggle porn.
And sometimes as we move towards a goal. That’s very very important to us.
We tend to look at something like that with a whole lot of interest.
And I use that phrase porn.
Which I know is going to probably get the the notice that this video is available put into a lot more.
Spam folders and I would like
But that’s what it is. I mean like, you know, I I think I coined it a few years ago and other people use the same kind of
idea when I see something really really beautiful. So beautiful that it’s a resting or so interesting that it’s a resting
like I was I was driving along Route 10 near Phoenix and the clouds everything was flat and the sun was beautiful and the
clouds the cumulus clouds were just amazing. They were like,
You know Bob Ross pictures and I’m like that’s cloudborn is what that is.
but the whole idea of
You know the idea of addiction to the struggle as opposed to addiction to moving forward.
He’s a danger that we face and that idea of.
Reading articles about how to live through the struggle how to manage the struggle that Timmy edges into the space of
struggle porn. I mean, it’s the point is not to glorify the struggle.
I’m all for avoiding struggle wherever possible but you can become addicted to that you can become addicted to the idea of
I’m working very hard and the whole world is against me in and it’s difficult. Everybody has problems, but I’m dealing
with the struggle, you know, you can also if you’re not struggling like if something falls into place and it actually
works pretty well.
You can feel shame.
Or guilt that you’re not struggling.
You know.
And I think there’s something to be learned from people who have been really super successful. I saw an interview with
Bill and Melinda Gates.
on Stephen Colbert the other night here in the United States and
they exhibit
behaviors that
Only can classify them as are not spastic.
You know, I love Tony Robbins. I love Gary V.
I love
Are the people in the internet marketing space like Brendon burchard and and people like that?
For what they do, but I don’t necessarily.
find
They’re really overly. I like way over the top energetic spastic approach to things.
As productive as they could be I look at people who really made it like big-time like billionaires.
you know, they’re pretty calm about things and they take
Struggle in stride. The I’m sure they’ve had struggles. I’m sure they have there been times when they’ve been very
exercise.
About what day?
what they do, but I think they also have an idea that
You know.
Celebrate the little successes celebrate our successes.
don’t be upset if
For a moment you don’t have to struggle.
Don’t succumb to the struggle point take a look at your overall approach to things.
Is it productive is your heart into it? Do you love it?
Are you doing what we said in a couple of other videos the MVP, you know ready shoot aim process.
There’s really no need to be all that hyped up on making sure you’re struggling. That’s the only way you know that you’re
making any progress because
Sometimes there’s no struggle necessary.
Sometimes you find true love.
Sometimes you find a bit of success and sometimes he’s more than just sometimes.
Imagine the person that really defies the struggle.
And things start to click for them.
They might start thinking something’s wrong, and I hope that’s not you.
Albert isn’t how do you feel about struggling? How do you feel about having roadblocks in your way and you look at it and
go?
rate
I’m part of the Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill.
Tell me in the comments below. I’d love to know I want to know what what you’re feeling about that or if you’ve ever
succumb to the idea that you must be struggling or else something’s wrong.
If I if he’s if he’s videos are helpful to you. I’d really love to hear from you in the comments. I’d love to hear what
what this is.
Doing for you if it’s working for you if things are helping we’re ready. We’re doing a video a day for the year. That’s
the that’s the challenge.
And so far away. Are we up to hang on one second here. I will tell you all this number 50.
This is number 50.

  1. David!
Thank you for ALL these wonderful vids, but this one hits home! I find myself doing this in a number of areas including my professional VO business. I have done this “Struggle Porn” and didn’t even know it. Also, success, when it comes, I often feel like I am not worthy. Thanks again! Life is a struggle enough without finding it where it doesn’t exist or dealing with it and moving forward and learning. Mike Austin

  2. Struggle is endemic to self-made people. Actors might just be the epitome of the class. We all struggle but, to buzz a recent popularism, solopreneurs by nature are all alone.

Struggle is such a part of the business that those who don’t appear to have suffered are looked upon with suspicion and, indeed, derision. Those responsible for hiring and teaching may eschew those deemed not having “Paid Their Dues.” There may even exist some jealousy or envy.

So in some way I tend to forgive those who flack their trials and tribulations during their course—but not to those who wallow in a self-indulgent pity party.

  3. Happy Day 50, David! Great post. I know SO many people who constantly bitch about what a rough go of it they’ve got, whether in work, or family, or whatever… when if they stopped to think about it, (unless they’re complete narcissists), they would realize that we all struggle. But isn’t it nicer to be around people who talk about the positive aspects of their lives, their successes, their work… I think we all need to know that when we put negative energy out into the world, it’s got to come back to us which then validates our message of constant struggle. Why not choose to embrace the work that it takes to do ANYTHING, and pat yourself on the back for each baby step? Just make the choice. Even if the going gets rough, reach out to your “support team” (we all have one) and they’ll get you back on track.

  4. I accept struggle and overcoming obstacles as part of my journey, but I don’t dwell on them. I also don’t focus on showing the outside world what things I have to go through to get what I have. I feel those things are personal and I prefer to focus on the good things, the successes and my eye on what’s next.

  5. Honestly, I use to think that I had to struggle in order to achieve anything I wanted, that it was a given. Slowly I’ve been training myself and reminding myself that it’s not necessary to think this. That really life is suppose to be easier and even fun! what a concept.

Thanks so much for these videos!
    Mindy

  6. Nope. I don’t welcome struggle one bit. Working hard and overcoming obstacles is rewarding, but enjoying the struggle is not for me. Thanks for the video David.

  7. I love this, David, thanks. I have definitely been victim to this way of thinking at times. Being raised to believe that you have to work hard to get anywhere and that life isn’t easy translated to struggle for me. I just finished reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and loved it. He talks about how many of us unconsciously want to suffer and shows how we can let go of that and still be productive. I feel like the idea of “struggle porn” is right in line with that.
