A Free Phone Patch And A Free Video Feed For Narration VO

Hey, there!

I love when my clients and students come up with a nifty way of using technology.

My buddy Brian Selke, who’s also a student of mine, just wrote about what he did with Bluetooth and TeamViewer.

He writes:

Hey, there!

Hope you’re doing well!

I did something pretty cool yesterday. I used your trick of having the director on Bluetooth headset while I recorded. It was awesome!! I took it one step further…I got into a Team Viewer session and watched the video I was voicing. As I would finish the lines, I emailed them to her and watched her insert them into the video.

What would have taken two weeks of back and forth, took only two hours. I got to see my finished portion in its entirety right away!

I know this probably isn’t typical, but it was efficient and FUN!!! I even helped change a couple goofy sounding lines and made suggestions to the editing. It was totally collaborative and so cool!! The director loved it and wants to do it like that from now on.

YAY!!!

Just thought I’d share.

Brian W. Selke

What a win for Brian, and maybe it might come in handy for you, too.

What cool tech tricks have you come up with to make your VO career more productive? Let me know in the comments below.

Hope this helps.

  1. Loved this story, DHL. I remember VO pal, Marc Scott sharing his story about using a Bluetooth headset as a phone patch and how effective it was. Needs must, right?! It’s savvy and sensible. Great share! 🙂

  2. I used to use an expensive phone patch system through my audio board until ….I was on vacation in Hawaii and a producer needed to do a phone patch session really quick. …. I simply used earbuds plugged into my iPhone. Worked so well that I now use this method in my home studio booth.
Only difference is I wear headphones over the earbuds. That way I hear the producer through the buds and my voice through the headphones as I read copy off the iMac in front of me, while also observing the session being recorded on Amadeus Pro.
I can play back and/or edit for the producer to hear the final take before I send out the sound file. The studio speakers play back beautifully for both my ears & the producers, as my entire work station is in my booth. It’s a quiet iMac with no fan noise. Ease-of-use accelerated with the use of a trackball.
I’m also liking the Eyeball surrounding my mic for acoustical help.
    Is this too easy?
