13245: A 45 Minute 10K Takes You Just As Far As A 90 Minute 10K Does

Hey there, hero!

Math.

Some people love it, and some people scratch their head over it.

But this particular math concept is simple: distance is distance, no matter how much time it takes.

In a race, the fastest contestants usually win.

But the work we pursue and reach for? It’s not a race. So there’s no medal for getting there faster.

In fact, it might be better to take your time: you’ll miss less. You might even enjoy the run a bit more.

But you have to be at peace with the fact that it’s not a competition. And if you travel 10K…does it really matter how long that takes?

Does this business of acting and writing and voice over feel like a race to you? Are you anxious when you see someone succeeding? Do you feel like you’re falling behind if someone else figures something out or gets work? Let me know in the comments below..

  1. Funny you should mention this. Having just finished my first run through all of the VO Hero courses I did judge myself for taking close to 2 years to do all of them. I did go slower sometimes as there were things I just didn’t understand. So, I would go back.
And then I reminded myself that in this 2-year period, I took the ACX Masterclass, took Jim Johnson’s Accent class, narrated two audio books and had to go very slowly as I learned a LOT about me. I have come through this time with way more confidence than I have ever had in myself and that really is a win of epic proportion to me.
So thank you, dear David for all I have learned from and because of you and all that I continue to learn from being a VO Pro.

  2. I quit speed reading just for this reason. I was missing the flavor of a story, the nuance, the details of characters and events. So, I don’t really plod along normally but I have learned to relax and enjoy the trip a bit more.
