13245: A 45 Minute 10K Takes You Just As Far As A 90 Minute 10K Does
Hey there, hero!
Math.
Some people love it, and some people scratch their head over it.
But this particular math concept is simple: distance is distance, no matter how much time it takes.
In a race, the fastest contestants usually win.
But the work we pursue and reach for? It’s not a race. So there’s no medal for getting there faster.
In fact, it might be better to take your time: you’ll miss less. You might even enjoy the run a bit more.
But you have to be at peace with the fact that it’s not a competition. And if you travel 10K…does it really matter how long that takes?
Does this business of acting and writing and voice over feel like a race to you? Are you anxious when you see someone succeeding? Do you feel like you’re falling behind if someone else figures something out or gets work? Let me know in the comments below..

Let’s talk about a race.
And let’s talk about a race not so much
in terms of the fastest time,
but the distance that it covers
and how that applies to you in your
pursuit of gaining excellence as a
performer, an actor, a voice talent, a
writer. Let’s do that in this episode of
the VO Heroes podcast.
So, I saw a uh a statement the other day
that I thought so obvious, so beautiful,
so wonderful. A 45minute
10K
takes you just as far as a 90inut 10K
does. We’re always looking to optimize.
I’m guilty of it. I I procalitize to you
to optimize. But the one thing that you
can remember is no matter how long it
takes you to do something, if you go
from not having done it to having done
it, no matter how long it takes you in
between, you still have it done.
So whether you’re running a really fast
record pre record-breaking pace setting
uh run or you’re kind of jogging along
but you get from point A to point B just
as surely no matter how much time it
takes you’re still getting from point A
to point B. So take that as a win right?
So, if you’re studying how to become a
voice talent and instead of it taking
you a month or two to learn everything
you need to know, and you won’t learn
everything you need to know in in a
month or two, but some people want to
really like be overachievers and be fast
runners, if you will, and get it done
and get on with it, right? I get it. You
know, the faster you can achieve a
certain level of expertise, the sooner
you’re able to start pursuing it at that
higher level. I get that.
But we sometimes forget you’re still
getting there eventually. And that’s the
key. However long it takes you, just get
there. Plot along if that’s what you
want to do. Go a certain distance and
then back up a little bit and review
what’s going on and do it again. Do some
more and then move a little bit further
along. So again, a 45minut 10k takes you
just as far as a 90minute 10k. You don’t
have to be the fastest rabbit in in the
forest. You know, take things at your
pace. Take things at the pace that
you find most palatable. And I’ll give
you a secondary uh sort of bonus tip. If
you go a little bit slower, you won’t
miss as much. I could have done a whole
separate uh podcast on this, but if you
zoom through training or if you zoom
through learning a process or you zoom
through watching a video or listening to
something at 2x or or more,
you’re going to miss things. It’s just
the nature of the beast. Your brain
can’t accept uh information at any
higher level than it’s capable of doing.
And so if you try to force things into
it, you’re going to miss stuff. And so
you’re going to have to go back and
spend time doing it anyway. So, you
know, relax, take your time. Remember,
uh, remember the phrase, a 45minut 10k
takes you just as far
as a 90minute 10K.
So for those of you, especially those of
you that are overachievers,
what are your thoughts on this? Here I
am, you know, banging away at a ham with
a hammer at your ability to move quickly
through stuff and to be efficient. And
what about you, David? I mean, you’re
always talking about being efficient.
Yeah. Yeah, I get it. Uh, but there are
times when I just enjoy the ride, you
know? Let me know what you think in the
comments below. And I’m talking about on
vioheres.com.
Check it out. Go to viohereroes.com.

come out. I’d love for you to do that.
And you can share this with an actor who
might be concerned that they’re taking
too much time going through an online
course or going through the learning of
a process. Put their mind at ease. I’m
David H. Lawrence the 17th. I thank you
so much for watching and for listening
and I’ll see you in the next episode of
the Video Heroes Podcast.

I LOVE THIS. Thank you, David!! 👏
Funny you should mention this. Having just finished my first run through all of the VO Hero courses I did judge myself for taking close to 2 years to do all of them. I did go slower sometimes as there were things I just didn’t understand. So, I would go back.
And then I reminded myself that in this 2-year period, I took the ACX Masterclass, took Jim Johnson’s Accent class, narrated two audio books and had to go very slowly as I learned a LOT about me. I have come through this time with way more confidence than I have ever had in myself and that really is a win of epic proportion to me.
So thank you, dear David for all I have learned from and because of you and all that I continue to learn from being a VO Pro.
I quit speed reading just for this reason. I was missing the flavor of a story, the nuance, the details of characters and events. So, I don’t really plod along normally but I have learned to relax and enjoy the trip a bit more.

I’m in the 90 minute 10k category of voice over.
