Create A Safe Environment For Self-Improvement
Hey there!
This is not an easy business to be in, for a number of reasons: pure randomness when it comes to auditioning and booking jobs, a constantly shifting landscape of opportunity and application of our skills, and something even bigger…
…facing the bad news, the failures, the mistakes and the frustrations, and doing so with an eye toward improvement and future success.
There’s only one safe way to do that. If you don’t do this for yourself, you’re in for more heartache than anyone should be made to suffer.
And if you do this for yourself, you can freely go about being a more effective master/mistress of your own journey.
Here’s what that one thing is that you need to create.
Hope this helps!
David
Raw YouTube Captioning
hey there it’s David H Lawrence the 17th
and the other day I got a message from
someone who wanted me to help them with
a voiceover problem and I had to chuckle
because the message came in in like
January or early February of this year
and the reason I didn’t see it is
because they sent the message to me on
Pinterest like Pinterest I didn’t even I
didn’t even know that Pinterest had a
messaging system that’s how little I use
Pinterest I mean I have a channel on
Pinterest
I have an account when I do these videos
the the the stuff ends up there kind of
I mean it’s a link to back to the the
actual page but I don’t really use
Pinterest that much I started using
Pinterest to show off really sexy
pictures of microphones and images for
some of the shows that I’ve been on as
an actor but it’s not a channel for me
to provide support when it comes to
voice-over or acting or any of the
products that I sell or the classes that
I teach and it made me think that we
have so many channels available to us
that we live in from time to time that
you sometimes make the wrong assumption
that oh well if I message somebody if
they have a if they have an account on
this system whether it’s Twitter or
Facebook or LinkedIn or Pinterest or
tumblr in the old days or you know who’d
YouTube that if I just message them
they’ll get it right they’ll get it
they’ll respond to me it’ll that’ll be
perfect they’re constantly hanging out
watching that no I’m not I watch one
channel and one channel alone and that
one channel is email that’s it
and I built all of my tools all of my
weapons to help you to be used with
email it’s all in one place everything
is is kind of filed in folders so I can
use the the tools in a group setting so
when I get a number of things for the
ACX master class I can reply to those
things in that Facebook group or
whatever but I get my notifications via
email and I use Gmail’s tool settings
plugins additional items to help me in
that process where I don’t do that on
Twitter I don’t do that on Facebook I
don’t do that on LinkedIn because it’s
just way too much for me to manage I
don’t want to have to hire somebody to
watch all of the social media channels
that I’m on so if you want help from me
and I’m happy to give you help
especially if you’re one of my pros then
I give you deep help um email me don’t
send me a messenger message don’t tweet
at me don’t send me a DM don’t message
me on Pinterest or Instagram or LinkedIn
or whatever choose to send me an email
and I’m wondering if this is iock I
don’t think this is the case but I’m
wondering am I just a Luddite I don’t
think so I think I’m pretty open to
technology I just know that I need to
focus and email helps me focus in a lot
of different ways there’s things that I
can do with email that I can’t do with
messaging on Facebook as an example they
just started adding rich text if you’ve
noticed some of your messages you can
add bolding and italicizing and you can
make h1 h2 headers things like that but
not so on Twitter and not so on
linkedin’s messaging system so that’s
what I use I use email he’s one channel
and that way I can concentrate my
efforts as well it makes me more
efficient it makes me a better support
person what’s your channel what is it
that you live in on a daily basis like I
live in Gmail what is it that you really
hang out on and look to be supported
with let me know in the comments below

for your email I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
David, how is it that I feel like you’re talking DIRECTLY to me? This video is a great reminder, but I have that “Midwestern Value” that keeps me humble. Self-depreciation is a way of life for me…
Fantastic!!! Thanks David. Perfect reminder not to be so down on myself…and celebrate the wins just a little bit more.
I realized, as I was about to listen to your video this morning, how grateful I am that I can count on these videos to be positive – sometimes informative, sometimes inspiring, but always meant to help and uplift. And that’s before I even listened to the content of this one. It’s like walking into the woods and getting a breath of fresh air before entering the sometimes smoke-filled rest of the day. I feel that you are a person who truly wants to help and make the world work better. (I just got an image of you as a little Norse god in charge of fixing things.)
Thank you for all you have done to make my VO practice better. Thank you for your joy in what you do.
And in answer to your question, yes I was taught, Don’t brag, which is nice, but that can become don’t brag to yourself. That does tend to make me minimize my accomplishments. Great idea to take a moment and joy in what I’ve done before rushing on to the next thing.
Thank you!
Great advice David! Very important for performers. Be kind to yourself and revel in your successes. Thanks for the video 🙂
Very affirming and caring, David. Thank you.
