13279: What’s Your Marketing Mashup?
Hey there, hero!
A marketing mashup…what the heck is that?
It’s what I call those quick little phrases that give someone a clear idea of your creative essence: who you are, how you sound, what kind of characters you play…that sort of thing.
What’s my marketing mashup? “Paul Giamatti meets Uncle Fester.” Simple. Direct. To the point.
And maybe, for all the profiles and bios and headlines and signatures you’re asked to create in our business, maybe you could use one. Heck, maybe you already have one.
Either way, let’s arrive at one, and if you would, post it in a comment below, and include your headshot if appropriate.
So…what’s your marketing mashup?

So, what exactly is a marketing mashup?
And
more importantly for you, what is your
marketing mashup? We’ll take a look at
both of those in this episode of the VO
Heroes podcast.
We’re always being asked to come up with
a headline or a really short bio or some
sort of branding notification.
What label would you call yourself? And
for the longest time, I have
kind of centered in on a marketing
mashup, a combination of a familiar
brand and another familiar brand that
kind of describes me. That’s what I look
at a marketing mashup as. And the one
that’s worked for me the most is Paul
Gamatti meets Uncle Fester. Right? So I
resemble Paul Gamatti to a degree. and
the bald head, totally bald head, Uncle
Fester, you know. Uh so that works for
me. And it’s and it’s two very memorable
and familiar
uh stereotypes in a good way. Um
brands that people can look at and go,
“Oh,” and maybe even laugh at. You know,
I’ve had people who have chuckled when
I’ve said, “Uh, yeah, for me it’s Paul
Gamati meets Uncle Fester. It’s even on
my business card. And so I wonder what
your
marketing mashup might be because if you
were able to come up with something, you
know, and a lot of people who teach
branding, people like Jody Ben, Jody
Bentley and um Brian Pataka and others
who are in our sphere, you know, they’ll
come up with ways that really capture
people’s attention and know and and and
honor honor your brand.
So, I’m wondering if it might be a good
exercise for you to come up with two
names that are adjacent to what you
resemble your approach, even if it’s not
someone’s name, you know, actor name and
character name, but maybe, you know,
badass mom that’s actually a serial
killer. I don’t know. I don’t know.
Whatever. Whatever. But but I’m sure
you’ve had hints in that direction.
Maybe you’ve done a type it for me uh or
a type casting or a type me. There are
various names uh where you sit in front
of a group of other actors or other
voice talent.
And they just jot down their impressions
of you and you don’t try to act. You
just sit there with your arms folded or
your legs crossed or you reading or
whatever and you look at them and you
don’t try to be anything. you just are
and that essence they jot things down
and maybe you can get things from that
you know uh like uh I remember when I
first did one before we came up with the
Paul Gamati one it was plumber who
happens to be an aeronautical engineer
you know the bluecollar side and the
intelligence side and you know creepy
evil villain that uh has a heart of gold
I don’t know but those two it’s it’s
it’s a lovely little convenient ient
this and this this meets this this
crossed with this and the phrase that I
like to use is marketing mashup. So
wonder if that might be a good exercise
for you if you really need one if you
need one at all. But what I’d love for
you to do is in the comments below, you
can paste in a a an image and I’d love
to see one of your head shots and
whatever you come up with in terms of a
marketing mashup. Let us see it. you
know, if you’re part of our community,
if you’re one of our pros, uh, or if
you’re, uh, one of the ACX masterclass
grads or a narrate your own book, uh,
author, I’d love to see what you come up
with in that space because imagine how
easy it would be to answer the question,
tell me about yourself, tell me what
you’re like, tell me what your essence
is. You know, there you’re often asked
that sort of thing. or creating a
headline for a casting site uh profile
or for a cover letter or for a
signature. Who knows? They could be used
in many, many different ways. And I’d
love for you to have the opportunity to
create that on your own. Maybe you ask
your friends to give you some
suggestions on what your marketing
mashup might entail. So on
viohereroes.com where this episode
lives,
pop something in the comments below. I’d
