13268: That Job You Didn’t Get Still Has Immense Value

Hey there, hero!

So…

…you didn’t get the gig.

They went with someone else.

You’re disappointed, and that’s understandable. But what are you missing from the experience?

It can be a lot of valuable information and factual results.

I share some of the gifts we get when we don’t get the job.

Were any of them forgotten? Are any of them a bit more valuable than you thought? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. I had a crazy Zoom callback that did not lead to a booking. They asked me to do an Austin Powers photo shoot for the camera. I had such a fun time being completely silly. It taught me just how crazy a callback can be, and to be ready for anything in the future.

  2. Amen! My friend Emily Rose says she sees every audition as an opportunity to get better at doing mini one-woman shows… And my friend Tony Horton (the P90X guy) told me long ago that he sees all the times we “do it for free” are simply training for the times we get paid. Thanks for this reminder! So much joy in the process when we have an empowered perspective 🙏

  3. I learned some time ago that I often learn more from auditioning/interviewing and not being hired than I do when I get the job. Often, I have been hard on myself and for a long time, I thought it was my job to never look vulnerable or challenged. Which is counter to what I told my students and the young ones I coached. So, I decided to take my own advice and just enjoy the ride; laughing is my reaction to my “learnings” now. (I do still analyze to see what I learned/what I need to learn.)
It’s good I decided to listen to myself. And it’s good I have you to remind me. Thank you.
