13188: Success-ful Doesn’t Mean Mistake-free
Hey there, hero!
Feel free to wake up every morning and give yourself a break. You are fallible.
Don’t assume that with experience, even a great amount, comes perfection.
Even if you have years of mastery, you can still make a simple mistake.
And it doesn’t mean anything other than you’re a human being.
You’re going to make mistakes. Forever. Learn to take them on as teachable moments.
How do you treat yourself when you make a mistake you don’t think you should have made? Let me know in the comments below.

well I was just handed a lovely little
lesson and if you think that people who
have had a monum of success maybe have
years and years of
experience don’t make
mistakes sometimes really careless
mistakes I am here to disabuse you of
that notion and share with you what just
happened to me moments ago and we’ll do
that in this episode of the vo Heroes
podcast
I’m not one of those people who lets a
teachable moment uh Slide by uh this was
a teachable moment for me uh I have a
very specific way of making these videos
of making my lessons of setting up my
gear checking it and so on and in
service to
speed uh there was a a new version of a
piece of software that I use and that I
teach to my voiceover and acting clients
that was just released and it changed a
few things about how it was installed
about how it looked about how it was
optimized and I wanted to get videos out
on that ASAP I wanted my uh my followers
to have the benefit of what I found as
quickly as
possible
so here’s what it sounded like as I was
recording the uh the
video it just just listen the new
interface the new version of the export
audio interface is completely different
and that means yeah
so I made the mistake that I carefully
warn my clients not to make all the time
starting their recording thinking they
have the right microphone selected and
they
don’t so uh this was a
particularly valuable lesson to me
because I recorded two uh 15 to 20
minute videos with the wrong microphone
selected didn’t even look back I was
like oh I’m doing great I’m like mowing
through this stuff this is going to be
great I’ll release it today it’ll be
awesome check double check make sure
everything’s doing don’t don’t rush
ahead of things um but know that these
things are not uh an indication that you
are a lesser human being or even if you
don’t have the experience to set things
up check things uh maybe make test
recordings and so on even if you don’t
have that experience yet it’s okay on
some occasion you’re going to make
mistakes and it’s humbling and it’s
instructive and it’s reinforcing of the
notion that we are all humans you know I
love to say uh when you wake up in the
morning don’t don’t mistake the fact
that you’re a human being
um we all need these reminders from time
to time and this was something that I
needed pretty quickly cuz I’m in the
midst of a lot of video recording and it
could have been worse it could have been
worse the really interesting part is the
language that you use with yourself I
kept saying to myself ah what a great
learning
experience and it was it was I could
have beaten myself up I could have felt
awful I I was certainly disappointed
that ID wasted the time but I was
appreciative of the lesson and so it’s
another indication that even when you
have all the experience that I have the
you’ve done this work for years decades
centuries who knows at least in multiple
centuries um mistakes happen and they’re
learning experiences and they enrich us
and they make us better and I want that
for you I want you to not beat yourself
up when you make what you might perceive
to be a dumb mistake because everybody
does
it uh if you like what you’re hearing
today you can forward this on to an
actor that may have beaten themselves up
or a voice talent that might be hanging
themselves for making mistakes from time
to time uh you can hit the like button
if you like what you’re hearing you can
subscribe to the channel and be notified
when new episodes come out by ringing
that notification Bell I’d love for you
to do that I’m David H Lawrence the 17th
fallible as I am I thank you for
watching and for listening and I will
see you in the next episode of the vo
Heroes podcast
(from YouTube)
Great lesson, David. Thanks!!
There is no failure, only lessons… and opportunities to begin again, more intelligently 🙌🏻 Thank you for this!
What we call a “mistake” is always a “learning”. I find thinking of it this way makes it easier to forgive myself for being stupid and be grateful for the lesson. Sometimes it takes me a bit of time to get to that last step.
Thank you for sharing, David!
Thank you for sharing this lesson David.
