Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling – Rule 14

Hey there!

Ask me about storytelling, and how important it is to your VO career to develop and hone your storytelling skills – I could talk about it for hours.

It’s essential.

So, every so often, I like to roll out items from this list from Emma Coats, who used to work at Pixar as a story artist, and who serially tweeted Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling.

I’ve been sharing with you one of these rules every so often, along with how you can apply each rule to your VO artistry.

Today, Rule 14…

Why must you tell THIS story? What’s the belief burning within you that your story feeds off of? That’s the heart of it.

This rule leads me to think about choosing whether or not to audition for a project, especially when it might not be in your wheel house.

As a VO artist, you could easily get 10 to 20 auditions a day, not counting trees you shake yourself at ACX and with current clients.

You need to be bold about choosing which of those auditions to actually respond to. Choose the ones you love – that you have to do, because you can hear your voice already reading the copy. Do the ones that align with your brand.

And leave the rest to someone else.

And watch your booking rate soar.

Next rule?

Let’s be honest.

I’ll share that with you next time.
