I love vision boards.
I hate the power that people sometimes hand them, because I hate for people to be disappointed.
Why I love vision boards comes down to one thing: focus.

you to help you move forward
get closer to the success that you want
as a voice talent or as an actor
i love vision boards and for those of
you that have watched these episodes and
thought what wait what you what you’re
not a woo kind of guy hear me out
i’ll tell you why in this episode of the
vo heroes podcast

so when we think of vision boards we
think of
big
bold
filled with
pictures and words and other
inspirational tools up in front of us
and sometimes when people put together
vision boards and there’s any number of
different places you can go on the web
to show you how to put together a vision
board
sometimes people
go one step further
and they invest some sort of mystical
power in division boards and you might
be one of them i mean
i am constantly
discussing let’s
say it nicely discussing
the innate power
of
certain items that we create for
ourselves
as talismans as icons as things that
uh
you know
suffice it to say
i i’m not that person i don’t invest any
sort of mystical powers into inanimate
objects
i’m very much about helping my clients
and myself
know that my power is within me
and so
uh it’s not that i’m not spiritual it’s
not that i’m not uh you know i don’t
want to
give good vibes
but when i look at a vision board i
always ask myself especially someone
else’s vision board i always ask myself
a question and that is
how much are they relying on the vision
board to do all the work
it happens
people go oh i get it i need a vision
board so i’m going to put one together
and then i’ll be fine
you know it’s like the attraction
principle or the secret or manifesting
you you’ve heard me talk about how
i would rather not rely on the power in
those things and the people that do rely
on the power immediately go well there’s
your problem
you’re not you don’t believe i’m like
yeah you’re absolutely right so but
having said all that
i believe in vision boards for another
very important reason
it’s one single word
and that is
focus
when you walk into your studio or you
walk into your office or you walk into
your den or wherever you do your work
and you see a vision board
you get to take in
all the things that you’ve put on that
vision board
that are important to you that matter to
you that are
front and center that are on the front
burner and if you’re managing your
vision board the way i’ve seen some
people teach you how to manage vision
boards you take off the things that
don’t mean as much to you anymore and
you put on the things that do
and what you want in a year or a month
or five years or whatever your goals
your
mission right
the vision board allows a very succinct
visual focus to occur
with those things that you want to
accomplish and for that
the focus that it gives you the reminder
that it gives you
my vision board
is
my daily here i’ll show you it’s my
daily um
three things that i need to get done
today
for uh my ivy league method and i’ve
talked about the ivy league method here
many times this is my vision board when
i come in it’s sitting waiting for me
and so again it it does the same thing
it serves the same purpose it focuses me
smaller space not a big vision board i’m
also not very good at drawing so you
know and i don’t know about pinning
things to it all i’m saying is whatever
it takes in your life to help you focus
on your goals
do it
i would just suggest that you not
invest
or attribute
uh
powers to that piece of focusing tool
that you have
that don’t actually exist
you got to do the work
you got to follow through you’ve got to
set yourself up for success now having a
vision board or having an ivy league
card
waiting for you when you walk into your
workspace every day
who who wouldn’t want that as a piece to
focus on the path moving forward so
i’m sure i’ll get comments below that
are like you don’t know what you’re
talking about vision boards are great
they’re just like dream catchers they’re
just like you know
okay i get that and i will i’ll nod my
head and i’ll say okay if that works for
you great
imagine
what you could get done
if you invest that power in yourself
and that’s what i want from you i do
want you to be able to focus on what’s
going on and if a vision board helps you
do that more power to you
so that’s what i have to say

There are so many helpful tools you can use, but they’re just tools. They don’t do the work for you. The one piece of advice I’ve found to be dependably helpful is this: have a bias for action. That’s what makes all the other tools work.
I know you’ve all heard that somewhere before.
I’ve just found out about bullet-journaling, a tool to both plan your days and track habits. Bullet journals can be just sober black and white, but it seems to be a girly thing to make them artsy and pretty to be more motivating. What is your opinion?
They are the on-the-desk version (in many ways) of the on-the-wall vision board and planning chart. If it works, and keeps you focused…what’s wrong with that?
I might consider using a vision board. I’ve never tried it.
David, I totally agree with you about how giving our power away is fruitless.
Decades ago I worked through the book The Artist’s Way. One assignment was to create a vision board. I dutifully did it, pinned it in the hall to my office, and saw it every time I came and went. And then I moved — several times. 10-ish years ago I came across it. I was stunned! Everything on that board had come true: me walking the beach in fancy clothes (and going to Disneyland in my evening gown with my husband in his tux), owning a PDA (aka smartphone), traveling the world, and even having a house with window seats doubling as bookcases — with mountain views through the windows. The visuals of a vision board were powerful for me and kept my index card (yes, that’s what I use now) on track to create the life I live and am creating.
