13290: I Ain’t Here For A Long Time, I’m Here For A Good Time
Hey there, hero!
This George Strait song title was shared with me for the first time in my life by a fellow VO talent at a mixer last night.
Thanks, Nadia Ahern.
Mind blown. In a quiet, satisfying way.
And a great reminder of what an awesome choice we’ve all made.
Do you sometimes need to remind yourself of the fun of being a creative? Let me know in the comments below.

I’ve been going to these weekly mixers
uh put on by uh an organization that
sits
six strangers
at a dinner table together. And it just
so happened that at last night’s mixer
uh I reconnected with a voice talent
that I met uh over a decade ago here in
Los Angeles. And she said something that
just made me so happy. So happy. I want
to share it with you in this episode of
the VO Heroes podcast.
So, the phrase that she shared
reminded me of what an awesome life I’ve
had. I’ve chosen. I’m in. I’m enjoying.
I ain’t here for a long time. I’m here
for a good time.
And I was just like, whoa, wait, say
that again. Repeat that one more time.
Because sometimes we get so wrapped up
in the pressures and the challenges and
the speed bumps in this life that we’ve
all decided to pursue the performance
life, acting, voice over, writing,
whatever it is. You know, there’s no
there’s no guarantees.
There are no uh planned routes that
everybody has been following
consistently forever.
It’s not like a typical uh bluecollar or
white collar job pursuit where if you
just do this then this happens then this
then this happens. It’s very random but
it’s so fun. And sometimes when we’re
faced with those challenges and we have
to figure out how to overcome them, that
takes over the share of our mind that is
outsized.
And it’s good to remind ourselves
sometimes just how joyous this life can
be. Remember those moments when you nail
an audition, when you meet somebody who
really loves what you do, when you book
something, when you get a call back or a
pin or an on hold. Um those moments when
the joy is in the forefront and the
challenges kind of recede.
Just remember that. Remember that
not everybody gets to do what we do.
Not everybody has developed the skills
that we’ve developed. And if we’ve
developed them really well,
you know, we kind of fool people as to
making it look so easy that anybody can
do it. We know that they can’t. So my
question for you is, how do you remind
yourself that you ain’t here for a long
time, you’re here for a good time. What
do you do to keep that
uh available to you in terms of your
feelings painting pot? You know, let me
know in the comments below over on
vioheres.com. If you’re here on this
page and you’re watching the video here,
great. Um, scroll down the comments
below. if you’re listening uh on a
podcast app or on one of the other
sites. Go over to vioheres.com,
hit the uh the podcast area and just let
me know how do you remind yourself uh to
have that good time and to remember what
a joy it is to be who we are, right? Hit
the like button if you like what you’re
hearing. Uh you can subscribe to the
channel. You can click the notification
bell and be notified when the next
episode comes out. You can share this
with another actor who might be a little
grizzled at this point, a little chippy,
and needs to be reminded as to how good
this life can be. I’d be thrilled if you
did that. I’m David H. Lawrence the
17th. I thank you so much for watching
and for listening, and I will see you in
the next episode of the VO Heroes
podcast.

Here’s to being here for a good time!
I have a ritual that I participate in almost every day. I get this amazing chocolate chip cookie from a local business. The cookie is four and a half inches wide. I cut it in half and put it on a small plate. I microwave it for 25 seconds. I shut myself in my office with that half of a cookie. I put the window shades down. I turn all the lights off except for my desk lamp, which I turn down to a low intensity. I put on some relaxing Lofi music that has no beat. I pull a piece off the cookie. It’s soft and warm. I put that piece of cookie in my mouth and close my eyes and relish in that delicious cookie. I thank the universe for that cookie, for that moment in time, for the universe itself, for existence, for my life. I do this ritual almost every day.
I read whatever strikes my fancy at the moment. Or I re-listen to lessons from VO Heroes. Or go over past workouts that remind me why I love doing what I do. Or I look for something to audition for or sing my heart out in the shower. Walking in Nature helps, too. And so does remembering to play. These are a few things that help me get out of my head and away from the negatives that surround us every day.
