13251: How I Easily Add A Full Body Shot To My On-Camera Audition Slates
Hey there, hero!
Sometimes, a little thing can be a puzzler, and can be annoying, and when you figure out how to solve it, can be a bit embarrassing.
For years, I didn’t enjoy the notion of shooting a vertical full body shot for my on-camera self-tape auditions…
…until I did. I stopped being so precious about it, and made it easy. And gave casting directors exactly what they want: a look at me, head to toe.
In this episode, I show you how I do it. (And if you usually listen to the audio version of the podcast, you might want to watch this particular one.)
How do you do your full body shots? Is it even easier than how I do it? Willing to share? Let me know how you do it in the comments below.

Full body shots. I have had so many
questions about people saying, “How do
you do a full body shot? It’s a pain in
the butt to like do.” Okay, I just did
one. I I do it the same all the time,
and maybe it will help you if I just
share with you how I do full body shots
uh for uh auditions. So, we’ll do that
in this episode of the VO Heroes
podcast.
I just got finished doing an audition
for a uh a commercial uh self tape and
as usual they asked for a full body shot
and it can be a little annoying
especially when the actual audition is
uh you know 2T or or you know head and
shoulders and uh how do you do that? So,
you don’t have to reset your camera and
do all that. You can take a full body
shot and just insert it into your slate.
And here’s how I do it. I use the same
full body shot all the time. Here, this
is the actual full body shot uh slate
that I just prepended to my audition and
I just submitted it moments ago. Maybe
this will be helpful to you. Hey there,
it’s David H. Lawrence the 17th and uh I
am willing to shave. And here’s your
full body shot.
So that’s it. And all I do is kind of
frame myself a little bit to one side of
the other and put the full body shot
next to me. It’s a still frame. Um and
that’s it. That’s all there is to it. It
doesn’t have to be as complicated as
some people make it. You know, it’s like
I’ve heard people complain that they get
theirel they get themselves all set uh
in just the right framing for the
audition that they want to use and then
they have to, you know, tear that all
down or set it all up differently to do
a full body shot or do vertical. And how
do they put it in the screen? Maybe that
simple thing could help. And in any
video editing software, you can always
add a still image and position it where
you want it and so on. And that’s how I
do it. And no one has ever complained.
No casting office has ever said, “How
come you didn’t do a moving full body?”
No, they don’t care. They just want to
see what your body shape looks like,
right? I don’t know. Does that help?
It’s kind of a practical one rather than
the sort of esoteric ones that we
normally do for these podcast episodes,
but I just thought I’d share with you
what I do. All right. If you like what
you see, hit the like button. Uh if you
want to subscribe, hit the subscribe
button. If you want to be notified when
new episodes come out, click the
notification bell or whatever the
notification button is. You can do all
those things. You can share this with
another actor, an on camera actor who
might be struggling with little tiny
detaily things like this. Feel free go
up to the address bar and forward it
over. Happy to do that. And if there’s
anything that you have questionwise,
please put it in the comments below
because I’d love to know what your
thoughts are on this. All right, I’m
David H. Lawrence 17th. I thank you so
much for watching and for listening and
I’ll see you in the next episode of the
VO Heroes podcast.

Terrific idea, David! I may try this on my next audition. Cheers.
I actually haven’t thought about that one, great idea, thanks!
Interesting. I may have to try this. 🙂
