13207: “Every Thing Is Everything.” Wait, Wait…What?
Hey there, hero!
Sometimes, words come together to describe things that you don’t expect.
In a recent session with a coaching peer, she declared:
“Every thing is everything.”
I tried to process that, and she gave me some assistance.
What she meant was that as creatives, every thing we learn as performers in ANY category of work helps to build everything we do as actors and voice talent in ALL categories.
In other words, if you get better at something in one area, it’s going to help you be better at that thing in all areas.
Example: if you learn to control and influence your vocal volume on camera, you’ll be better at that vocal work on stage, and in the voice booth.
Another: if you learn to give yourself permission to be less forced and more casual with your lines in a commercial (because it serves the story), you’ll be able to pull off that same move in an audiobook or a video game.
(We build a whole course around this concept in VOHeroes Pro, called Mutual Muscles. It’s powerful stuff.)
After you watch this episode, would you agree? Have you found this to be true? Has it helped you be a better actor? Let me know in the comments below.

I just got finished doing a session with
uh one of my peers uh sort of a
presentation and one of the things that
she said during the live stream
was everything is
everything and what she was talking
about in particular was the skills that
we acquire as performers as writers and
as
actors feeding the other things that we
do let’s talk about that in this episode
of the vo Heroes
podcast now everything is everything
that seems a little on the nose don’t
you think David yeah but but in context
though it was so telling I have said for
a long time that you know all of us
pursue various skill sets within the
world of performance multi- henet are
everywhere writer producers actor
directors writer uh narrators
Etc and what I’ve noticed and what I
count
on is
that when we pursue upping our skill
level in one area of
performance it automatically makes us
better in other areas because we glean
secondary and tertiary skills from that
up in one category that are applicable
in other categories if you become a
better writer you understand writing
better which means you understand script
analysis better which means you’re going
to be a better
actor if you pick up some skills some
acting skills in the world of narration
audiobook narration there might be
things in the back of your head when you
write your next title that make a
difference in the quality of your work
and so know that you’re going to get
double triple quadruple Duty from the
time that you
spend taking classes doing workshops
doing workouts if you’re a member of any
of my programs doing your monthly
workout and not ignoring it going to the
business uh meetings and not ignoring it
um doing private coaching I mean you
know whatever it is that you’re doing
know that whatever you’re going to be
spending in terms of time and money on
upping those skill levels is going to
come back to you in spades
and not just in the category in which
you’re working but in all the other
categories in which you
pursue any sort of of uh accomplishment
so just know that that’s the case and
that everything is everything do you
have a different word for that or a
different phrase for that is there
anything is there any sort of parallel
in your life that you have noticed when
you do better in one area you’re going
to do better in another let me know in

conversation is sane and lovely and calm

much for watching and for listening and
I will see you in the next episode of

(from YouTube)
Great perspective on cross-training David. Thanks.
I don’t know that I have another phrase. The thought that popped into my head was: “Isn’t it all about learning, growth and change?” I know that my acting classes inform not only how I direct, but also how I interact with people in my personal life. Understanding a character in a script or book helps me to understand myself and others. I like this concept a lot! Thank you, David.
