13301: Daring To Move From The Dreaming To The Doing
Hey there, hero!
There’s a lot of dreaming going on in our community. We simply have to be dreamers to decide to be creative artists.
And we also have to be doers. And that moment when you decide you can’t ignore your dreams any longer and have to put in the work to achieve them…can stop us dead in our tracks.
It’s a big leap to move from the possibility of something nebulous and fancy to something planned and concrete.
And…you could fail miserably at the execution.
I’m offering a pathway or two to make that moment a bit easier and more graceful for you.
Do you hesitate to pursue your dreams because of that moment of decision? That feeling of doubt? What do you do about it? Let me know in the comments below.

We are dreamers and we are doers.
And sometimes it’s difficult to move
from one to the other because of one
particular speed bump. And I want to
help you shave that speed bump between
the dreaming and the doing. In this
episode of the VO Heroes podcast,
[music]
when we think about doing things, when
we muse and dream and scheme and wonder
and uh let our imaginations go wild,
um we rarely think about anything but
the upside, the possibilities, the joy,
the uh inspiration,
uh all the things that could happen in
our favor.
And then there’s this moment when we
judge, okay, do I actually do this
rather than just about thinking about
it? Because if I do this, [sighs]
I might fail.
I really wasn’t thinking about that when
I was dreaming about it, when I was
wondering about the possibilities.
And that can stop some people dead in
their tracks. They’re like, “Okay, if
I’m going to move from this whole like
conjuring the future thing into actually
creating the future thing,
then now I’m now I’m now I’m risking uh
potentially not being successful.”
Because in your head,
when you think about what could be,
you tend to just really concentrate on
what could be successful, what could
actually come into existence.
not
uh you know what I think could happen is
I’ll try it and boom bust no not going
to happen thank you ma’am next thing
right we don’t think about those things
and when we do when we actually consider
okay I’d like to do that I’d like to
actually put that into put that into
action then that that little feeling can
well up inside you of yeah but what if I
don’t what if I don’t do that what if I
don’t actually you you know, make it
happen. So, just know, be at peace with
the fact that you easily could not be
successful at something that you dream
about. You could not create exactly what
you had envisioned in your head as the
dream and how it how it looks. You know,
when you hear somebody say, “So, what
does that look like for you?” You know,
rarely do we get to the point where when
we do something that we’ve dreamed
about, it is exactly what we pictured
when we dreamt it. and you might fail,
but remember when you fail,
that’s still a learning experience.
You’ve now checked the box on something
that doesn’t work the way you thought it
would, or at least the way you
approached it didn’t work the way you
thought it would. That’s good
information to have. And there’s no
shame in that either. There’s no shame
in that failure. There’s no shame in in
doing the research. You know, when you
think about scientists and how often
they perform experiments that fail
versus the ones that we read about in
studies that succeeded,
you know, it’s way more in favor of the
experiments that failed. But that’s good
information. So, if you start to feel
that thing come up inside you as you
move from the dreaming to the doing,
that’s natural. Accept it. Be graceful
with yourself with it. Uh be at peace
with that. know that that’s going to
happen and do it anyway. You know, just
try it. And if you fail, well, you know,
you failed, that’s all. Uh try something
new. Try something different. Maybe
adjust some things about your dream that
help you achieve what it is that you
wanted to achieve.
But don’t let it stop you dead in your
tracks. Don’t let it prevent you from
going from the dreaming to the doing
just because it might not work out the
way you expect. Yeah. Um, I’d like to
know what you think about this. Tell me
what your thoughts are as you hear me
describe this. Tell me if you can
remember a time when you were dreaming
about something, maybe about your
journey as a performer, um, and it
didn’t quite work out the way you
thought, but you learned something from
it. Or maybe you decided not to do
something because you were afraid that
you’d fail. move to that production
center like Los Angeles or Atlanta or
New York or Vancouver or London or
Sydney or whatever because you just
might not make it there. I don’t know.
There’s all kinds of uh things on on on
the the spectrum of of what could
possibly be. But I just wanted you to
know simply acknowledging that you might
not be as successful right away or at
all as you think is a natural thing. And
you can actually choose to ignore that
and just move on forward. Move on down
the road. Let me know what you think.

Hello 👋 David — I’m Terre — Just consumed your very informative and inspirational message!
My goal is to create audio dramas; somewhat similar to radio broadcasts from the 1940’s and fifties, but with present day themes, conflicts, and concepts.
Looking forward to learning, and growing, and consuming the info you’re sharing about creating and producing Audio Dramas!
Take care!
Moving forward with “doing,” David.
I didn’t pursue a career as an on-camera actor for 46 years out of fear, then the universe said…it’s time.
I love framing it as: If you fail, that’s good information to have. I tried for 18 years to be a ballet dancer. Then I realized it wasn’t going to happen. I failed and went on to the next thing – Broadway dancer – where I was very successful. If I hadn’t tried, I would have spent my life thinking I could have succeeded in my childhood dream of being a ballet dancer if only I had gone for it. Meanwhile, I learned a lot of great habits that informed and helped the rest of my life.
I think this is an important point; you don’t always get the exact dream you dream. Every attempt affords learning; about yourself, about how the business works, about how exactly what you think you want happens. For most things I have gone after in my life the 1st step is learning that I don’t know what I don’t know. That can be a very big step forward.
And I once heard this story about Thomas Edison (don’t know how true it is, however, the point of it is valid) Someone asked Edison how he felt about the many times he failed. His reply was: “I didn’t fail, I learned all the ways it didn’t work.” Perspective is everything.
