13213: A Bigger Fear Than That Of Failure
Hey there, hero!
Is it possible that in addition to all of the other things you’re concerned with when it comes to your performance career, that actually having a bit of success might be more daunting?
More daunting than the possibility of…failure?
Because then, the rules have to change. You have to start living by the rules of success, not failure.
And you have new responsibilities.
How can this possibly make sense? Do you ever take a moment to consider if you’re fearful of actually succeeding? Let me know in the comments below.

you know we often fear that we are going
to suck at something we’re going to fail
miserably at something and I just got
finished uh with a session being a guest
on a podcast where we talked about the
opposite of that the fear of it actually
working and sometimes that can be bigger
than the fear of failure let’s talk
about that in this episode of the vo
Heroes
[Music]
podcast I just got finished chatting
with Hank philippy Ryan uh she’s going
to be sharing with her author followers
the notion of narrating your own book
and and what it’s like to be a narrator
and we were talking about the biggest
fears that uh not only authors but also
voice Talent actors have when it comes
to doing this kind of work doing any
kind of creative work and high on that
list certainly is the fear of failure
and the fear of other things but one
thing that people forget sometimes is
that deep down inside we can have the
fear of actually succeeding we can have
the fear of success the fear of it
working because what happens then well
first of all all the things that we were
afraid of
before aren’t true well how do what does
that mean about my level of judgment my
ability to judge things oh it worked and
then you have all these new
responsibilities it worked so what are
you going to do next what’s going to
happen next how are you going to follow
that up right how are you going to
support this successful moment that you
had what am I going to do if I can
actually do this
work I I I have no more excuses about
not pursuing it about not doing it about
not being good at it and I love having
to face that fear I love thinking to
myself oh well I was worried about that
but I don’t have to be worried about
that I don’t have to have a fear of
success and I think that it’s it’s one
of the last things that we tick off on
the list of things that we can Vanquish
the fears that we can Vanquish we’re
worried about our voice we’re worried
about our gear and the technology we’re
worried about the business and where
it’s going we’re worried about AI we’re
worried about failure and what we don’t
know and we’re also worried about
success and that is one that I would
consider if I were you and I’m wondering
if you have I’m wondering if you sit
there and go wow what if I’m really good
at this what if I can actually do this
what if what if when I sit down and do
this they like me they think they think
what I’ve done is lovely and they want
more of it oh my now oh let me know in
the comments below if this has ever
crossed your mind or what your fears are
I’d love to hear from you your version
of this especially the fear of success

like button uh that’s why it’s called
the like button cuz you like what you’re
hearing
uh you can subscribe to the channel if
you want to hit the notification Bell to

fear around approaching this work see

Fear of success definitely hit me after booking my first on-camera audition. It all worked out very well 🙂
I have been asked to look at the fear of success in other classes (Jodie Bentley). And I admit, I didn’t consciously think of it before she brought it up. However I realize that it is back there, trying to be sneaky in the back of my mind. What if I’m successful and I am offered lots of jobs? First thought? Hot damn-wonderful! And then gnarly little thoughts like how does that affect my relationship to my husband? My family? My friends…..
I once had a friend tell me that my being cast in parts bothered her and she wondered why I was called in and she and others who auditioned didn’t seem to be considered. It’s like the fear of flying, soaring…what if my success causes people to leave my circle?
Now that I am more aware of it, I can face it. I think part of facing it manifested as the dark nights I had at the end of last year….
Life is so interesting.
As always, David, thanks for the thought starter.
