13289: What Fairy Tales Are You Telling Yourself?
Hey there, hero!
I was just on a call with a potential VO client, and the conversation got around to limiting beliefs in general, and in particular, those excuses we come up with so we don’t have to try.
This is nothing new. People have been afraid of failure since humans became humans.
We look at the potential for failure, and then spend a lot of time creating a story or seven around why we can just take a nap instead.
It’s risky to try something new.
So what stories are you telling yourself so you don’t even need to try something new? So you don’t have to even come close to risking failure? Let me know in the comments below.

You know, throughout history, going back
to when we were trying to figure out how
to kill those mastadons to get some food
on the table, we have made up stories
when we don’t know the actual answers.
We’ve made up things that we think
likely
are true and maybe they’re not. Let’s
talk about that in this episode of the
VO Heroes podcast.
I watch people all day long pursue voice
over and acting and writing things that
have no guarantee of success. None
whatsoever. And I encourage those in my
community, you if you’re not in my
community yet, you know, who whoever to
try new things, explore, expand, reach
out, go beyond, get uncomfortable, make
a mess, break things, see what you can
do to improve your lot.
And I’ve watched people tell me that
they can’t do it. Tell me they’re not
going to be successful. Tell me it won’t
work.
And I wonder how they know.
I I I I just wonder and by and by asking
them questions about it, what what makes
you think that? What what tells you that
that’s the case? I realize that
many times when we are approaching
something that is new to us or we
haven’t been successful at in the past
or we’d really like to do but we don’t
quite know how,
it’s easier to come up with an excuse
or a series of reasons that really are
just excuses
of why we don’t even need to try because
we’re not going to be successful. Here’s
why. I’m too old. I’m too uh large. I’m
not uh the right intelligence level. I
don’t have enough talent. I can’t find
the talent. I don’t know how to do this
and I can’t figure out how to do. We
come up with these limiting beliefs.
And I just got finished talking about
this with someone on Zoom. Limiting
beliefs versus enabling beliefs. We
create limiting beliefs at a very early
age and then refine them over time. they
become so easy to use and sometimes we
create stuff that is absolute BS right
on the spot just so that we don’t have
to risk failure. And my question for you
is,
what are you telling yourself right now
to make it easier to say no to something
new? What are you telling yourself right
now that basically puts you in the
position of saying, “Yeah, I was going
to do that, but fill in the blank.”
Think about that. If there are things
that you want to do, things that you
haven’t tried yet, things that you
haven’t, you know, gotten the training
in or gotten experience at or made
mistakes at and learned from,
because it’s just easier to tell
yourself a story about why you can’t do
it anyway.
I think that’s something to consider.
And I’d love to hear from you in the
comments below because I’d like you to
give yourself permission to shed those
things to say no to the stories that
you’re telling yourself so that you
don’t have to risk failure.
So what stories are you telling
yourself? How are you hearkening back to
the days of the caveman, you know, and
saying, “Nope, not going to do that.
Can’t do that because, right?” Are those
causes, thosees, are they really true?
Think about that. Tell me in the
comments below. And if you can give me
examples of things where both you’ve
said, “I’m not going to try this because
I feel this or I believe that.” and
times maybe when you’ve reconsidered
that and actually tried it like you know
maybe pursuing voice over or audiobooks
or writing you know let me know in the
comments below on vioheres.com if you
don’t mind you know that’s where the
conversation is nice and sane and
respectful and polite. Uh just scroll
down to the comments and and leave me
leave me your thoughts. Hit the like

episode comes out. Share this with
another creative type who might be
limiting themselves by telling
themselves complete fairy tales about
why they can’t do something. I’d love if
you’d do that. I’m David H. Lawrence the
17th. I thank you so much for watching
and for listening and I will see you in
the next episode of the VO Heroes
Podcast.
