13152: Is Your Work A Work Of Art? Or Is It Just Work?
Hey there, hero!
I’m feeling sheepish.
I feel like sometimes I might be failing at reminding you that you’re an artist.
My priority lately has been you ways to maximize your focus, do your busy work easier and faster, manage your productivity and so on. And with the number of auditions you could be getting, I’ve given you ways to make that process easier and more reliable.
But what I don’t want to do is forget the art.
I don’t want you to be so mechanical and workaday that you forget the fun, the joy and the privilege we have to ba artists.
Is what you have created for yourself as an actor and voice talent still art? Or has it become a tiresome “job”? Let me know in the comments below.

question is what you do as an actor a
voice Talent an on camera actor however
you apply your trade is what you do do
you consider that to be a work of art or
has it become just simple
work let’s find out and let’s figure out
something to re re reboot the spark is
that even a phrase in this episode of
the vo Heroes
podcast
I think sometimes I spend so much time
reminding you that there needs to be
some organizational
mechanical uh office
related uh tasks that go with all the
creative stuff to keep your career
moving
forward that I sometimes pay short
shrift to the notion of art art is one
of the four main keys that I teach in vo
Heroes and in the other courses that I
teach uh it is core to what we
do and sometimes we get so little chance
to do that art that it
becomes foreign or something that we
need to relearn very quickly all over
again to engage in it you know how often
do you get an audition how often do you
actually get to go work in a studio or
on set or on stage
and sometimes it becomes drudgery
certainly in the world of VoiceOver say
you get what you wish when you go
looking for a series of agents for those
of you that don’t know in the world of
VoiceOver unlike the world of on camera
more than one agent is the norm for
people that are represented by agents
and they’re in different
cities and what that can lead to is an
incredible number of auditions coming in
every day and unfortunately
audition fatigue whereas oh I got to I
got to do more auditions I got more
auditions coming in it goes from works
of art to simple
drudgery work busy work how do I
systematize this so I can do all 20 of
the of the of the offers of for
auditioning that I get every day and I’m
here to tell you taking time for
self-care taking time to experience the
root of the word recreation which is
recreate create being the root word but
recreating ourselves through vacation
through days off through you know
pampering what whatever it is whether
it’s just checking out for a bit to let
the batteries
recharge if you’re
feeling that you have turned what is a
joyous artistic Pursuit that yes could
make you money and provide you with uh
you know a career if that has become
drudgery if that has gone from artwork
to
work I urge you to notice that and to do
something about it because people leave
this industry all the time because it’s
so hard and it’s so filled with
rejection and it’s so
disheartening and can be really
mind-numbing the amount of work that is
necessary that becomes just work so my
question for you is what we have done
here is what you have created for
yourself is what maybe I’ve taught you
what you’ve learned from others become
simple work as opposed to the joy of Art
and artwork I want to know in the
comments below talk to me about your
experience yeah and let’s create this
conversation cuz it’s worth talking
about it really is is hit the like
button if uh this has brought up
something for you that you like uh you
can subscribe to the channel you can
click the notification Bell to be
notified that’s why they call it a
notification Bell root word of
notification is notify uh note um do all
those things and and share this with
other actors if you think they might
benefit from it other voice Talent I’m
David H Lawrence the 17th I thank you so
much for watching and for listening and
I will see you in the next episode of
the vo Heroes podcast
