13144: What Work Can You Do During This Strike?
Hey there, hero!
The strike against the TV/Theatrical/Streaming contracts and the members of the AMPTP continues, now months in for both writers and actors.
Writers are really hamstrung in terms of what they can work on, but our strike is slightly different as there are many areas of work, covered by many different contracts…
…many of which are voice over based, rather than on-camera.
(And what can you so with the time you might have spent doing on-camera auditions.)
Let’s find out which ones you can get paid to do, and which ones you can’t.
UPDATE: SAG-AFTRA has asked for a strike authorization against the producers of interactive projects (most obvious is video games). We will update once we get more information.
Once you watch or listen to the episode, is there an area of union acting work that you’re not clear about in terms of accepting work? Are you a non-union actor that is confused about what work you can do? Let me know in the comments below.

so what do you do when your entire world
your entire Community all the things
around you that you had counted on at
least hopefully being available to you
are gone because of a labor
incident a laborer walk out a strike
what do you do well in our business you
pay attention to the facts and we’re
going to talk about what you can do
during a strike to continue with your
acting and voice over in this episode of
the video Heroes podcast
[Music]
it’s really important to understand that
when a labor organization is engaging in
negotiations and those negotiations hit
an impasse or aren’t productive and that
that labor organization decides to go on
strike
that they’re striking over particular
items
in the case of the wga their world is a
lot more inclusive in terms of what they
write for and what they’re striking over
but still they are striking against a
group of people called the amptp and
others and their strike is their strike
sag-aftra
um their negotiations were over uh The
Prime Time theatrical contract and again
with the amptp
but tag after covers for you the union
actor or for those of you that are going
to be in the union many many many
categories of work that were not being
negotiated nor were they part of the
strike
and so when you’re in a situation like
that be aware that yes there may be some
areas of work that you can’t pursue
because they’re not being done
but there are other areas of work in
particular with a sag after action
whatever contract is being negotiated
and being struck over is what work isn’t
available but everything else is so for
the prime time theatrical uh uh
situation still available voice over all
voice overs except for prime time
animation that includes audiobooks it
includes commercials it includes
um
video games it includes co-ed you know
corporate educational stuff like ivr and
e-learning and Museum tours and all the
stuff that’s in there you know store
announcements
just be aware that
the world is
not as horrifying as it can appear to be
from the outside
uh be aware of what your uh your union
organization is doing if you’re a union
actor if you’re someone looking forward
to being in the union study this
situation while it’s happening
um and know that when there is an action
like this and you don’t have anything to
audition for and you don’t have anything
to go in for there’s no production
happening now is a great time
to sharpen the ax you know I talk a lot
about
um uh the Abraham Lincoln method he once
said if I had an hour to chop down a
tree I’d spend 45 minutes sharpening my
ax
and you have an opportunity in
situations like this to up your game to
up level your auditioning process or to
learn voice over or a category of
VoiceOver that you weren’t in before
um there’s always a way to make hey both
while the sun shines and while it
doesn’t shine so brightly uh look at
these situations as opportunities
as opposed to uh awful disgusting
horrifying situations because they are
what they are and you can make things
better simply by changing how you think
about them uh but in particular in the
case of a labor action be aware of what
those those action or actions might be
in truth what they actually mean
and you know I can’t wait to work with
some of you that are are joining uh
video heroes or have joined the ACX
master class or just like coming into
the sphere of influence of these podcast
episodes for the first time it’s lovely
it really is if you want to forward this
to somebody who’s particularly upset
about the recent labor actions and and
what it meant for their possible future
or near-term future career please feel
free to forward this just go up to the
uh the address bar and put in you know
copy it and put it into an email and
send an offer just forward them this
page or the email that you got the
notice on if you want to hit the like
button I’d really appreciate that many
of the people who view this or listen to

Yes, there are categories that actors can still work in during the strike. Thanks for the reminder David.
