0072: 128 Speed Bumps Shaved In Just 10 Minutes

Show notes:
Hey there, hero!
I’ll admit it.
I got sucked in.
It started slow, and built over time. It affected my productivity, my sleep, my health.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is, I finally decided to do something about it.
And I did.
I deleted 128 apps, mostly games, from my phone. And at times, especially when I’m about to go to sleep, it’s hard to not go back to the App Store, and grab just one to pass the time.
But…I’m sleeping better, and I’ve replaced the game playing with two things that far more beneficial to my life: news and meditation.
Here’s the link to the Breethe app:
Are you ready for an app spring cleaning? If you’re all set in that area, what else is slowing you down? Let me know in the comments below.

i have a confession to make
i was addicted to something that was
ruining my mental health my sleep
my good will my daily approach to life and
i did something about it
maybe it will help you to do something
about whatever is
stopping you from great mental health
and good sleep and all that we’ll share
in this episode of the vo heroes podcast
[Music]
there’s been some shame around this for
me there’s been some quietness around
this for me
because i really didn’t want to have a
discussion about this until i figured
out how to solve it
but um i’m sure i’ve mentioned a couple
of times here the journey that i’ve had
over the last year or two
embracing new things that before i would
have rejected as being too woowoo
but have been really helpful in terms of
my sleep in terms of my breathing in
terms of my mental health in terms of my
attitude during the day
and one of them is something that i’m
i’m really quite embarrassed about i’m
not joking around here i really am
because i realized
i would go to bed i would read the news
or something and then
somewhere around midnight or so maybe 11
30 i would say yeah give yourself a
little gift of playing a game on your
phone
and i would play a game on my phone a
slot machine game or a bingo game or a
first person shooter or a strategy game
or a word game or a arrange the tiles
and and score points kind of game or
match game
i had
many of them
and the problem was i couldn’t just play
for 10 minutes or a half an hour or an
hour
i would
look up
and it was four in the morning
and you know none of these games have
little tiny clocks on them they suppress
the clock in the upper left-hand corner
of your of your phone so you don’t know
what time it is it’s like being in a
casino right
i ended up one night snapping
i just
lost it because i’m like
i am better than this
and i went about
spending a 10 minute period
probably from
4 20 in the morning until 4 30 in the
morning
deleting every single game on my phone
every one of them
every one of them there wasn’t one left
behind
to play every so often when you were
feeling down or feeling up or feeling
lonely or feeling happy it didn’t matter
they were gone
i had one group of games that was
nothing but slot machine games
that had over 70
in the group
you know it was crazy it was just
hold it down delete hold it down delete
and when i finally got finished the
difference in the number of apps on my
phone and where i started was 128.
and
i waited to see if there was a result
from that i waited to see if it had any
effect at all
and i’m here to tell you
that it has it’s been terrific
now have there been times when i’ve been
oh come on
let’s just go to the app store and let’s
get a game come on
treat yourself why not you’ve been a
good boy
no
no
right now my replacement for a game
because as you know
if you want to create a new habit you
could you you have best results when you
replace it
with a better habit a better behavior
and my new habit is to use the app
breathe
b-r-e-e-t-h-e hi lin goldberg
hi all the people that help me fall
asleep with sleep stories and with
guided meditation i mean it’s part of
the whole journey that i’ve had over the
last year or two accepting things that
before
i completely rejected because they were
so woo-woo right
but when i feel the urge to play a game
it’s a long-standing habit was years and
years and years doing that i simply go
and i tap on breathe
and that
initial
calming soothing music that the splash
screen on breathe gives you just
is a signal that it’s time to lock down
for the day
time to just sort of shut everything
down
so it’s been great
and there’s some other things that i’ve
been doing in terms of my health that i
haven’t shared with you
i will
once i work out the kinks and how it all
works
but i’m wondering if there’s something
that’s stopping you from being your best
self
especially late at night especially
regarding sleep
especially regarding your mental health
your happiness
is there something that you can do one
thing
that you could spend five or ten minutes
on
that would really be helpful
to you would be a gift to yourself i’d
love for you to share that with me in
the comments below wherever you are
hopefully you’re on voheros.com
and uh playing with things there that
would be great um but if you’re on
youtube or if you’re on any of the
social channels
feel free to let me know if this makes
sense to you
i have never felt
better well maybe when i was a lot
younger and a lot thinner i felt better
i don’t remember but i know over the
past few years this is spectacular
and i wish that for you too so first
thing to do is identify what’s the speed
bump what’s stopping you from being
in a better place let me know
if you want to share this with another
actor who you think
might benefit from what i have to say
about this i’d love to have you do that
just go up to the address bar copy the
link send it off
uh you can subscribe to this channel and
you can also hit the like button if
you’d like
to hit the like button because it’s a
like button and you can like it

Ooh, amen! My Apple Arcade subscription—beloved as it is—became a problem for me… until I also instituted a no-games-on-my-phone rule. I replaced the pick-up-and-play habit with a Super Duolingo subscription to learn Spanish instead, and now restrict my gaming fix to board games with friends and a Switch (docked mode only!) for a half hour a few times a week. And that’s been a WONDERFUL boon for my sleep, happiness, and social life, too.
In recent years you’ve spoken openly about other health challenges you’ve faced and the steps you’ve taken to improve upon them. What you’re doing with Breathe is another step in the right direction. It makes me happy to hear about it. The woo woo stuff might seem a little too woo woo sometimes but a lot of it is very helpful, as you are learning. You are practicing mindfulness, which is part of Mind Set, which you talk about all the time. “Eat your own dog food” as you would say. My wife and I listen to Lofi Girl on YouTube at night, and then we leave soothing space meditation music running in the living room when we sleep. Keep up the woo woo!
So true…and it’s lead me to the calling of voicing guided meditations. Trevor’s working with me on that project, and I’m in my second course with another meditation mentor as we speak. So cool!
