0065: The Important Difference Between UpGRADES and UpDATES

uh
all of our pro members get the
opportunity to ask questions have
discussions and so on and one of the
things that comes up often is hey
should i you know follow apple or
microsoft’s urgings to upgrade
my operating system to this new fancy
newfangled version and people come out
of the woodwork to go no don’t do that
and it made me think perhaps it’s a good
idea to talk about the very subtle but
important difference between the word
upgrade
and update
and we’ll do that in this episode of the
vo heroes podcast

when
computer companies create new versions
of operating systems they’re always very
cutting edge very bleeding edge
new opportunities for creation but also
new opportunities for there to be errors
because
people that have created software before
this operating system came out
didn’t anticipate some of the things
that that operating system
wants or requires and so it’s always a
good idea to hang back
if you can
when
when apple for example
comes out with a new set of macintosh
computers and they have a brand new
operating system the last one as i
record this was the update from big sur
to monterey and there’s going to be
another one next year and another one
the year after that
and i always tell my clients let me take
the arrows in my back let me be your
scout on the frontier let me do some
work and i’ll let you know
when it’s safe
for the the software that we use the
devices that we use and so on to upgrade
to this newest operating system now
before i go into this any further note
that if you’re buying a new computer you
sometimes don’t have a choice
because the new computer has functions
or benefits or features that will only
work if the new operating system is in
place so in that case you kind of can
just throw out what i’m about to tell
you and just go on with the idea that
you have to you have to use that new
operating system but
they want you to be on the new operating
system for two reasons number one it
shows off the capabilities that they
have and number two and this is even
more important is usually
there are
uh better security features in the new
operating system as they discover things
that the bad actors in the world the
malware people in the world the scammers
and the spammers and the hackers in the
world are trying to do to get into our
computer so that’s a good reason to do
it but almost all the time
there is the opportunity to update
the operating system that you’re using
right now that you’ve become accustomed
to
that is operating all of your software
and gear just fine with no problems you
know you can sit down at your computer
and you can do your work and not have to
worry about compatibility with the
latest and greatest operating system so
we say just hang back
we’ll let you know my team of coaches
and i we play with this stuff all the
time we’ll let you know when it’s okay
um and we also have a
recommended
setup in terms of which operating system
to use so where the confusion comes in
is all of these operating systems
are being
pushed by the company update upgrade
upgrade update uh if you go to for
example your system preferences pane in
in on a macintosh it’s going to tell you
upgrade now to
currently it’s monterey
um there are some
very many reasons actually not just some
but very many reasons why you shouldn’t
do that but what you should do
is update
and that’s slightly different so let’s
look at the difference between the two
an upgrade is a full number increase
currently with apple so
uh big sur was mac os 11
monterey is mac os
12.
and that’s what i want you to avoid
that’s an upgrade it’s really a huge
major invasive reboot and reset of your
system with new software
but within big sur and now that
monterey’s been out for a while as i
record this even within monterey
there are what are called dot updates so

was the first big sur update but let’s
go to big sur’s wikipedia page
uh this is the page that that wikipedia
has for big sur and if we scroll down
and click on the link that takes us
to the release
uh versions the release options
and we scroll down you see all of these
11.0 11 point this 11 point that and if
you look over in the column that talks
about why this was released almost all
of them say
security issues security updates
security things
that’s because
the uh
the company will do updates of older
operating system software
to face the threats that are now
available for all of their computers
and so this is a good thing to do it’s a
good thing
to do updates because almost all the
time it’s a security update and also
with both mac and pcs they’re often
updating their browsers as well on a mac
side safari uh on on the windows side
whatever browser is your default browser
for your windows
so those are good to do so if i can give
you one rule to take away from this
and with very rare exceptions because
sometimes an operating system update
will happen and it’ll break things
but for the most part you can rest
assured that you want to do this to keep
your computer safe

upgrade
hang on get some advice maybe not
probably not especially when it first
comes out no
update yes upgrade maybe
um and you can also set your computer to
do those
dot updates for you automatically or at
least present them to you automatically
i always have them present them to me
and then i make the final decision and i
always go
on
google and i check around to see if
anybody’s got anything negative to say
about the update but updates usually are
safe upgrades take your time be cautious
be careful you might break something if
you do it i hope that helps
