0051: Instead Of “I Have To…,” Try This Phrase Instead
Video:

Show notes:
Hey there, hero!
We’re all faced with a lot to do. Auditions, scene study, gear installation and optimization, training…you name it, we have it on our to-do lists.
And it can get a bit overwhelming to constantly say:
“I have to record some auditions.”
“I have to memorize my lines for the shoot tomorrow.”
“I have to get my new sound software set up.”
What if there was another way to say this that was both empowering and inspiring? And reminds us of how fortunate we are?
I’ve got your back on this, with just a small change in wording.
Once you’ve heard it, might it be what you were looking for? Let me know in the comments below.

there’s a lot of information bombarding
us every single day that is meant to be
helpful it’s meant to
make us better at what we do as
performers as actors as voice talent
and when you start to hear the same
thing over and over and over again it’s
worth paying attention to and just
checking to see if it’s valuable i’ve
got something that i think is for you in
this episode of the vo heroes
[Music]
podcast how we use our words how we
engage in self-talk that that voice in
our head that
that
either helps or hinders or kind of helps
us stand still it depends on the words
that we use words matter
and one of the words that i hear people
saying all the time is i have to do this
i have to do that i have to respond to
some auditions i have to memorize my
lines for something
i have to get that sound software set up
or i have to adjust my microphone i have
to
and
more than a dozen times over the last
four or five months i’ve been reminded
most recently by my friend jody
who i went to one of her sessions and
she mentioned this
you can choose what those words are that
you use as you do self-talk
and i’d like to invite you to make one
small change
that likely will make all the difference
in the world when it comes to
how you feel about those tasks that are
in front of you now we’ve chosen to be
in a really really awesome profession
not everybody gets to be
a voice talent or an actor
and so remember that as you
potentially make this change in your
self-talk instead of i have to
how about
i get to
i’m able to
i get to is the best change for me but
there are versions of that that take it
from sort of a negative put upon
somehow
task responsibility that you don’t
really want to face
to something that is a privilege
something that is
not what everybody gets to do
so instead of i have to respond to
auditions
i get to respond to auditions i get to
put together auditions today remember
when
you didn’t have any auditions remember
when you were trying to figure out how
to get auditions right
or
i have to adjust my microphone i have to
make it better for what i do how about i
get to change my microphone any way i
want i can put it however i want
pointing straight up talking across it
this way hanging it down i get to make
those choices i get to
rather than
i have to it shifts everything from
the
sort of
burden of doing something to
the joy and the privilege
of doing something what are your
thoughts
let me know in the comments below
see if you can
catch yourself talking to yourself as
though
oh you’ve got so much to do but oh
you’ve got so much you can do i get to
do these things so instead of i have to
how about i get to let me know in the
comments below and if you think this
would benefit
another actor that you hear complaining
all the time about how much stuff they
have to do forward this to them maybe
it’ll help them out i appreciate you
watching and listening i’m david h
lawrence the 17th
and i will see you in the next episode

I love this !
I was only just given a gentle reminder by a friend whilst doing a self test the other day – for a major feature and my friend reminded me to find the joy and privilege and gratitude in receiving a self test-
So now with this podcast I can word it like ‘I get to prepare for an exciting audition’
Or ‘I’m excited that I’m able to test for such a wonderful project.’
Because I honestly was walking around feeling it all a burden – stressful and not fun.
Thank you David !!!! What a great podcast as we are starting 2022!
Really love this, David. I was thinking of this yesterday for a selftape: “I get to act today!” Thanks for these great affirmations!
Lew Lew here. Spot on, bro! D’accord. Once again I get to follow your advice.
Great Podcast. Thank you.
I often use “I choose to”.
I get the privilege of reading and listening to David’s joyful wisdom!
100% Agree I take every piece of advice with a grain of salt. Every person’s path is unique.
I have tried to embrace this. I get to embrace this 🙂
