0018: 3 Things: Coming To The Defense Of Teachers, A Free Book And A Plan.

You know usually I come to you in these
podcast episodes with a joyous heart and
a supportive approach and I’m gonna do
that in this episode I promise but first
I have to get something off my chest
that has me a little frosted it’s become
a thing this past week to sue
universities and Boards of Regents and
administrations and even the teachers
and instructors of online courses why
are these people being sued why are
these organizations being taken to court
you will not believe but we will go into
it in this edition of the vo heroes
podcast

hey there it’s David H Lawrence the 17th
and I actually have a couple of really
great things that I have for you this
week one a free book and the other a

before I do I have to get this off my
chest I’m watching the news the other
night and I see that it is a a thing now
for students and their parents to be
suing universities and colleges and
private schools and the administration’s
in the boards of Regents and the
teachers the professors the instructors
of online courses why are they suing
them because to them the tuition that
they’ve paid for was for in-person
classes not online instruction and
online instruction is not as good as
in-person classes and to me that’s not
only a slap in the face to organizations
that are trying to make the most out of
this horrible situation that we’re in
with the kovat 19 pandemic but it’s also
in denial of the truth
teaching in person and teaching online
are very very similar and they’re in
some cases very different each has their
advantages each has their disadvantages
but I think what’s happening here is
that students and parents are desperate
for money and they’re looking any way
possible they can to conserve cash I
certainly understand that but to say
that online teaching is less than
in-person teaching is to totally deny
the truth and to totally throw out
personal responsibility did you attend
every single class that was held in
person were you up close with the
teacher in every one of those classes
and did that provide an advantage or
like me do you take online courses all
the time and become very expert at what
they teach I have so many instructors
that I’ve taken courses from online I’ve
never met them in person I’ve never gone
to a room and sat in that room with them
to take notes some I have but most I
haven’t and I have benefited greatly
from online teaching the ability to go
back and review things watch things
again the ability to rewind while you’re
taking the course if it’s recorded and
play it back if you didn’t understand
something the ability to ask written
questions and typed in questions to have
chat with your fellow I mean there’s so
many advantages and to think that these
students and these parents are going
through legal channels to try and
recover money for the value that they’re
getting in online courses is
reprehensible to me it just is I mean I
think about how excited people were that
massively organised online classes MOOCs
we’re so popular and that udemy is so
popular and think if Akande and Coursera
and places like that and big
universities with extension schools that
are online this is just it’s just an
athame to me it’s just really crazy and
I hope that you take it to heart and and
you don’t do this don’t do this if you
have a kid in school know that the
schools are just doing the best that
they
possibly can and that they are going to
be providing great value those those
classes that are being taught online
those schools are not saying you can’t
take finals in those classes they don’t
count towards your graduation they do
and you have to ask yourself is your
students showing up for those classes
are they engaged is their personal
responsibility at the level that it
needs to be or is it just a convenient
jab at an organization that has has deep
pockets to bring these to bring these
suits and the biggest part of this that
I think is an injustice is the fact that
sometimes the instructors of these
courses the professors and the teachers
are being named in these suits are you
kidding me are you kidding me
this is horrifying it just I’d love to
know what you think please leave me a

maybe I’m missing something but I don’t
think I am it just it just feels like a
huge slap in the face when all of us are
suffering at this point in time okay so
having said that having dispensed with
that and now feeling better that I’ve
gotten that off my chest I want to talk

act I could teach people how to ride
horses I could teach magic I could teach
Pilates I could I could teach something
