13191: What Opportunity Is Wearing And Sounds Like When It Shows Up
Hey there, hero!
We tend to hear the word “opportunity” and dress it up big time, expecting glitzy as opposed to basic work or work that prepares us for further opportunity.
Opportunities show up in various heights and widths and various levels of glamour.
Sometimes, they are awesome and legendary. But sometimes, they show up very calmly, ready to do some grunt work.
And that grunt work is sometimes more spectacular than the glitzy stuff.
And you get to play and benefit either way.

the reason we sometimes don’t recognize
an opportunity when we see it is that it
shows up wearing
overalls and sounding an awful lot like
hard work you know we look at
Opportunity the word opportunity is
something really really
fantastic and sometimes it’s not
sometimes it’s something really simple
let’s talk about this in this episode of
the vo Heroes
podcast that quote that we sometimes
don’t recognize opportunity because it
shows up wearing overalls and sounding a
lot like hard work has been variously
attributed to dozens of different
speakers all men by the way
um um Thomas Edison most commonly but
they don’t think he said it either the
point is there’s a bit of wisdom behind
that that I think is worth taking a look
at especially in business because we
tend to hear the word opportunity and go
oh it’s a booking it’s a writing
assignment it’s a it’s a commercial it’s
an audio book to narrate it’s a
television show to appear on it’s a film
to be doing ADR for whatever big things
right
not something that might be a bit of a
grind but necessary something that might
be uh building up a piece of
infrastructure
that you can use over and over again to
achieve other
opportunities you know I did another
podcast episode about using your ears in
a particular way to listen for
opportunities and this is my opportunity
to kind of hone and refine that that
opportunities aren’t always these big
huge things they can be little tiny
changes to how we do things that make it
easier for us to achieve other things
things so opportunities if we don’t
necessarily put them on some sort of
grand opulent pedestal and remind
ourselves that some opportunities are
very much work a day very much blue
collar very much
utilitarian uh a new tool a new process
the removal of a tool that isn’t working
right or the removal of a process that
doesn’t lead where we wanted to lead
these are also
opportunities I’m wondering if this
makes sense to you I really am wondering
if this makes sense to you this this
whole notion of showing up in in
overalls and sounding like hard work is
just a an image that sticks in my head
has this happened for you have you ever
been like oh I’m glad I learned that I’m
glad I’m not doing that anymore let me
know in the comments below I’d love to
know what you think about this hit the
like button you can subscribe to the
channel hit the notification Bell to
find out when new episodes are being
released I’d love if you do that you can
also share this with an actor who might
need to hear what what’s going on or a
writer who needs to reframe a little bit
about how uh opportunities are presented
I’m David H Lawrence 17th I thank you so
much for watching and for listening and
I will see you in the next episode of
the vo Heroes podcast

I love this. Opportunity to work on something that’s needed! I know just what that is!
All the grunt work of the technological work is me in overalls and when it works I feel attired in a fancy ball gown.
Wonderful thoughts to share, David. I consider signing up for the Narrate Your Own Book course an opportunity! I feel like I put the call out to the Universe for skills I wanted to learn and grow within myself–how to narrate mine and other author’s books–and then I heard about your course! Opportunity appeared. Though I don’t have as much time to dedicate right now and I am slow work through all the lessons and the practice, but being able to learn something I’ve long imagined is certainly an opportunity. You are correct, opportunity wears many clothes and presents itself in many ways, if we but look.
I have not heard this idea before. I like it though. I’ll keep it in mind for the future.
I love this! When I heard about VO Heroes and took your free introductions it was the opportunity I had been looking for. And yes, it’s been a lot of work and sometimes a little work. And also a great joy in my life. I love to learn new things, however they appear.
Of course, with the way my mind works, I now see David in overalls…..with a mic…..
David, Thanks so much for the inspiration on looking for those little gems, stepping stones! Love This!
