13248: The One Car You Cannot Learn To Drive In
Hey there, hero!
To get from here to there, to move forward (or even, sometimes, backwards), we need to be in a state of motion.
Not standing still, but rather moving toward our goal.
That sometimes takes bravery.
Like when you were first behind the wheel in driver’s ed class (for those of you who grew up in NYC, you’re excused – we’ll see you next time). Pure terror.
But you got moving. And that’s what you need to do to “figure it out as you go,” as opposed to the perceived safety of not moving at all.
Are you willing to let go of the “safety” of staying perfectly still? Do you just start moving when you need to get something done? Let me know in the comments below.

There is one kind of car that you cannot
learn to drive in. One kind of car that
you cannot learn to drive in. Let’s find
out what that kind of car is in this
episode of the VO Heroes podcast.
What is the one kind of car that you
can’t learn to drive in? You can’t learn
to drive in a parked car.
And that kind of uh lets you in on what
this episode is about. We often are very
very hesitant to get started in learning
something and we install ourselves into
a safe place, a parked car, right? And
the the quickest way to succeed at the
very least to get started on the path to
success is to just start now and figure
it out as you go.
You know, we we have goals and we have
steps for those goals.
That requires starting the car, putting
it in drive, you know, occasionally
making a misstep or a miscalculation as
to how fast to go or how hard to turn or
whatever. But we’re never going to learn
anything. Never going to learn anything.
Never going to advance to where we want
to be if we maintain that safe position.
And I want to um kind of nudge you and
say take a risk. You know, put your
glasses on and check the rearview mirror
and start the car and maybe make a mess.
And you know, listen, you can start in a
parking lot with no other cars around
you, but at least get the car moving.
Um, I’m going to stop trying to lay uh
my my goals here for you in this episode
across the notion of driving and just
say that when you’re doing especially
something as weird and amorphous and
organic as performance, acting, voice
over, on camera, writing, etc.,
where there really are uh a lack of
reliable rules that will give you your
success, right? Um it’s mostly figuring
it out as you go, figuring out as you as
you are presented with new challenges,
you know, a new scene, uh a new story
line, a new plot point, uh a new voice
that you want to create for an audition
or work. Um, it is the time to say to
yourself, I’m just going to figure it
out as I go, and I’m not going to rely
on the safety of being motionless, the
safety of uh staying still, uh, staying
uh, at the beginning, not moving
forward.
That’s not going to help you. What’s
going to help you is taking that risk of
turning too quickly or not being able to
parallel park or I’m back to the I’m
back to the overlaying it on the on the
driving thing. But the the thing is what
I don’t want you to do is to be held
back by the safety of inaction. That’s
really the bottom line. I want you to
have the joy and the fun of trying
things, effing things up, and going,
“All right, I’m gonna try something
different.” And just being okay with
that as opposed to, “Oh my god, look
what the me look at the mess I made
here.” Oh, whoa. We’re actors. We’re
writers. We don’t, you know, we’re not
we’re not harming the world with our joy
of of trying to figure this all out. So,
what’s the one kind of car you can’t
learn to drive in? A parked car, right?
I got it. Okay, fine. So, uh, give me
