13225: Remember This One Thing About Aiming For Perfection

Hey there, hero!

How many times in our lives have we been presented with the reminder that we are human?

That we are messy?

That we’re struggling?

That we are anything but perfect?

And how most of our pursuits simply can’t ever be totally perfect, no matter how much improvement we achieve, and are not life and death situations anyway, so…

Do you keep this in mind? Do you give yourself grace that you’re a work in progress and that you’re of a mind to be better, but can’t control perfection? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Life is so much easier when I just surrender. Thank you for the joyous reminder that to be messy is to be human.

Have you read the book 4,000 Weeks by Oliver Burkeman? The ideas in that book have been a permission slip for me to (healthily) release expectations, and embrace the time we have here on this planet—and pursue things I enjoy!

  2. Many moons ago I had a teacher who told me something I think about when I start trying to ride the perfection train. “Perfection is a limitation.”
And when I think about that thought, I realize how true that is. We learn from our imperfections, our “mistakes”. (This is the same teacher that told me we don’t make mistakes, we make learnings). Many worthwhile inventions, ideas and progress have happened because something, or someone wasn’t perfect. And what does perfection mean anyway? I’m sure everyone has a different idea of what perfection is.
Nice thought starter, David. Thank you!

  3. Ha! As luck would have it, the nearly perfect response I thought I posted this morning to the subject of perfection failed to post. I came here, hours later, to cut and paste the inspired words I so eloquently penned on the subject as a prompt for an essay on the topic. While perfection might not have a place in creative expression, it does however help if you perfectly press the “Publish” button on the lower right-hand side of this exact comment box.
