i have a question for you to contemplate
uh about what you know about the
knowledge that you amass and it’s
not what do you know how much do you
know I’ve got a little kind tiny twist
on this that I think you might like and
we’ll do that in this episode of the VO
heres podcast
Somebody the other day I was at some uh
meetup and they said “What do you know?”
They were drunk I’ll be honest They were
they were drunk Um and and I I actually
quickly knee-jerked to that and I said
“Well it’s not about what I know It’s
about what I can find out It’s about
what I can seek and how much I want to
do that.” And just that very day I had
seen a quote from Alice Wellington
Rollins who said “The test of a student
is not how much he knows but how much he
wants to know.” And I thought that was
great I thought that was absolutely
fantastic So my question for you is how
much do you want to know are you over
this whole world are you done is your uh
is your little pee brain just like
overflowing with stuff and you don’t
want anymore shoved into it or are you
constantly wondering about things and
constantly seeking new information and
new knowledge um I wonder what the test
is that she’s talking about You know a
better student wants to know uh a lot
and a lesser student doesn’t want to
know a lot Uh they just want to acquire
everything and then be done with it
But especially in the world of
performance there’s no end to the number
of things that you can learn There’s no
end to the amount of information and
skills and and strategies and tactics
and uh the the world rules as it is in
the world of performance There’s no end
to it because it’s constantly changing
You know our world of voice over and
acting and writing today isn’t even
close to what our world was in the late
20th century or even 10 years ago Things
have changed so dramatically So my
question for you is how much energy do
you have how much do you want to pursue
knowledge how much more knowledge do you
actually want to acquire
and then a follow-up uh episode of this
will be all about being inspired to
actually get more information and to
constantly get more information If this
sounds like a lot of work for you I get
it Let me know in the comments below Let
me know how you’re feeling about these
things Let me know how you uh react when
somebody says “Oh you got to learn how
to do self tapes You got to learn how to
do you got to learn how to use the new
version of Audacity You got to learn how
this this microphone how you address
this microphone you got to learn this
new uh way of formatting your documents
if you’re going to be writing things so
that you can present them to a a proofer
or a publisher Like I I I I wonder if
it’s all just too much or if it’s
something that you feed on For me it’s
the latter I just get joy and
nourishment and it just tastes lovely to
me when I learn something new when I
find something new But I can see how it
can be really really annoying to
somebody who’s like enough enough basta
you know Um so let me know in the
comments below I’d like to know what you
think about this Uh if you would also
like to share this with another actor
voice talent writer who might want to
hear this message Just grab the URL
above or hit the share button and and
share it with them Uh hit the like
button while you’re at it the subscribe
button if you want to subscribe to the
channel The notification bell if you
want to be notified when new episodes

Lawrence the 17th I thank you so much
for watching and for listening and I
will see you in the next episode of the
Video Heroes podcast
(from YouTube)
It’s true… nobody forced us to come here. IMO it was a choice, filled with planned and unplanned events that we knew ahead of time… we’re gonna be “doozies”. But when we’re “in it” things can get overwhelming.
We are always capable of “more”… in baby step “dosages”.
No matter how small the steps… the Universe supports us all. And it can be helpful to take stock and ask, “What is this or that situation trying to teach me?”
Being our best selves is a “job” that sometimes takes our entire life to realize. And that’s ok. ❤️
I never thought about it that way – the test of a good student is how much he wants to know. It really makes me re-think my process! Thanks. Mind blown once again.
A couple decades ago I was being trained to run an 8 screen privately owned movie theatre by the owner of 2 movie theatres in Oregon. I learned a lot from him. As our time together came to a close, he said to me that I fascinated him because I wanted to learn more. He said most people “my age” weren’t interested in learning anything new. And I thought: “Hmm that is very sad.” My belief is, we are here to learn all that we can and there are always things to find out about. I don’t think, for instance, that I know all there is to know about me; what I’m capable of, what I know, what I’ve learned, what I can learn from different situations.
For instance, joining VO Heroes was a great step for me to learn oh so much. And I am glad I’m here. I learn at least one new thing every day and I love that.
Thank you for all this, David.
How much do I want to know?
Just enough. That far and no farther.
Haven’t gotten there, yet, but I’m working on it.
