13307: Doing Your Very Best, Automatically.
Hey there, hero!
As we approach a task, a project, executing a process…we often worry that we somehow won’t do our best.
I’m here to tell you that you never have to worry about this again.
It’s a bit of a different way of looking at things, but it just might take your confidence to a new level, and offer a bit of relief from doubt.
In this episode, I’m going to share a way to look at your level of effort in a different light: assume that you are going to do your very best, automatically, at that very moment.
Might it be your all-time best? Maybe. Maybe not. But give a listen for a new way to be confident that you can’t make a mistake and do less.
How do you approach judging your outcomes? Do you give yourself a break and have faith that you’re going to automatically kill it, given the tools you have at that moment? Let me know in the comments below.

There are not a lot of hard and fast
rules in life. Some are hard and fast,
some are very malleable. I want to give
you one that you can absolutely rely on.
And when it comes to doing your best
work, and we’ll do that in this episode
of the VO Heroes podcast.
We sometimes are concerned about doing
our best work, doing the very best work
we can possibly do, uh setting a a new
standard for ourselves, raising the bar,
and so on. Well, I’ve got a way of
looking at this that might be useful for
you. I think it might be. Just know that
whatever you do, whenever you do it,
you’re going to do your very best
at the moment that you accomplish that
task. And you’re like, “Wait a minute,
David. What are you talking about? I
I’ve done things that are not so good in
the past and things that are better at
other time.” Right? I get that. But at
the moment that you do something, you’re
going to be doing the very best you can
at that moment with whatever you have
around you that’s supporting you or
holding you back or challenging you or
pushing you forward or elevating you. At
that moment, you are not going to fail
yourself and do less than you’re capable
of doing. You will do the very best at
that moment that you can. Now, it may
not be your all-time high. That may be
down the road or you may have achieved
that, you know, lightning in a bottle 5
years ago and that’s it.
Who knows? But know that as human
beings, when we’re presented with an
opportunity to accomplish something,
we don’t halfass it. We don’t unless
that’s the best we can do at the time.
Maybe we’re just not feeling it. Maybe
we’re under the weather. Maybe we’re
sick. Maybe we’re uh injured. Maybe
we’re uh maybe we have just a simple
lack of motivation. Who knows? But if
you’re injured, if you’re sick, if you
have a lack of motivation, that’s pretty
much the best you can do at that point.
But think about the stories that you’ve
heard of people who have also done their
best even though they’re facing those
limitations. the people that have done
Yman’s work without there being the
support around them that you would think
they’d have or the knowledge that you’d
think they’d had. My point is here’s
something that you can absolutely have
faith in yourself
that when you approach something, when
you’re about to do something as a human
being,
you are going to do the very best you
can at that moment. You don’t have to
worry about, you know, doing less than
that.
You will do the best you can, even if
it’s not the best you’ve ever done.
At that moment, you will not let
yourself down. You will take advantage
of everything that you have around you
and you will do the best you can. Is
this like hitting you? Is this like
giving you some some confidence? I hope
because
it’s like it was like an opening door
for me when I figured this out, you
know, that that and and it’s not I
didn’t figure this out all on my own.
I’ve seen examples of this all over the
place. I’ve seen my clients, my students
do amazing work and do so because it’s
the best they could do at that moment.
So, just know that that’s the case. Let
me know what your thoughts are on this.
Let me know if this is something that
you’ve always relied on or if this is
like new information to you. And when I
say let me know, I mean in the comments
below this video or this audio uh on

have you so that you know what’s going
on in my world and how I can help you in
the future. Um, and share this with an
actor that’s always kicking themselves
or a voice talent that’s always
disappointed in their effort or a writer
that’s like, “Ah, I didn’t do very good
there.” Just let them know they did the
best they could and they always will.
They can count on that. I’d really
appreciate it if you do that. I’m David
H. Lawrence the 17th. I thank you so
much for watching and for listening and
I will see you in the next episode of
the VO Heroes podcast.

A great reminder just I never got that growing up. You have such great positive vibes and love to share with artists. Thank-you.
Right on the money as always David! And as always it arrives at the best time. Thanks for all these “golden nuggets of wisdom”
“Always do your best” is a phrase I have heard, seems like all my life. It wasn’t until I listened to the audiobook The Four Agreements that that phrase was followed by an explanation stating that your “best” will be different every day.
So, your explanation is easier to grasp and to hold on to.
Thank you for reminding me to give myself grace. “Best” is not a stagnant ideal.
This idea is reassuring and encouraging. Thanks for the message David.
