13257: Mac And Cheese Or Chicken Fingers: What Else Is There?
Hey there, hero!
As kids, our parents often gave us limited choices (if they want to save valuable time and keep their sanity).
But you’re not a kid anymore.
If you’re trying to decide between a couple of presented options, there might be one or two that you could consider…
…even if no one’s mentioned them as a possibility.
You could take a moment when a list of choices are given to you, and ask, “What else ya got? PB&J? Cheese burrito?”
Ever thought to yourself that you could have gone in an unmentioned direction? How’d that work out for you? Let me know in the comments below.

When considering options for solving a
problem or treating an issue or doing
something new, uh, we sometimes limit
ourselves and it goes back to childhood.
So, let’s break that pattern and I’ll
show you how in this episode of the VO
Heroes podcast.
Parents are sometimes given the advice
to narrow the choices for their children
to help manage lives. You know, you
don’t want to say, “So, what do you want
for dinner?” Because that could go on
forever. As opposed to, “Would you like
macaroni and cheese or would you like
chicken fingers?” Right? Give them two
choices. Let them choose. And that kind
of manages the situation. I would submit
that as we grow older,
that might be the opposite of what we
want to do, especially in our business.
Uh, I’ve heard people say, “Well, my
choice was ProTools or Adobe Audition.”
And so I went with ProTools. And I’m
like, “Well, maybe your choices weren’t
just ProTools and Adobe Audition or
whatever, you know, the choices were
presented to you.” Um, I say imagine
the choices
that might not have been presented.
The moment I’m given a narrow group of
choices or a limited group of choices, I
think to myself, is that all there is?
Is there anything else that might be
available to me that I could do? For
example, you know, I used to use
ProTools. I used Adobe Audition when it
was called Cool Edit Pro, you know, and
and I thought to myself, well, what
about these other tools? What about this
thing called Audacity? Maybe that works
as well. Maybe it works better. I won’t
know until I try.
And so the point of this episode of the
podcast is to, you know, kind of plant
the seed in your head of thinking
outside of whatever group of choices are
presented to you. There may be more to
consider. And so I would ask you to take
a moment when you’re trying to decide on
your path and thinking, you know, here
are the two paths that somebody is
presenting me. Is there a third path? Is
there a lift I can take? Is there, you
know, a bridge I can use? Uh, imagine
the options that aren’t presented.
And I wonder if there have been
situations in your life when somebody
has said, well, you know, you can either
be an auto mechanic or you can be a
customer service rep. And you said to
yourself, well, you know, maybe there’s
another option. Maybe I I could be an
actor or a voice talent or a writer. You
know, somewhere along the way this
happened for you and I’d like you to
remember that and use it to your
advantage. Tell me what your thoughts
are on this in the comments below. And
by that I mean on vioheres.com.
That’s where the conversation is sane
and respectful. We we insist on that.

notified when a new episode comes out or
there may be an option that I’m not
presenting you right now that you could
consider like doing all three or maybe
something completely different telling a
friend that this might be an episode you
want to well I’m I’m not saying I’m not
trying to limit your choices that’s all
I’m saying. Uh I’m David H. Lawrence the
17th. I thank you so much for watching
and for listening and I will see you in
the next episode of the VO Heroes
podcast.
