13221: Fighting The Old Or Building The New?
Hey there, hero!
Some performers worry and fret about what has happened in their past, especially when that past is less than bountiful.
They look at failures and past mistakes as things that are regretful, hinder their progress and just can’t be forgotten. And it can really weigh on their mental health to continually live in what was before now.
Maybe you’re one of them? Occasionally?
But what about what you’re doing now to learn more, do better and experience change? How about the future, and what might be possible?
Or is the not-so-pleasant past simply unshakeable from your consciousness?
Could you imagine not wasting so much time on things that are long gone, you can’t change, and aren’t do-over-able, and instead spending your present and future getting better and better at what you do?
Do you dwell on the past, or do you concentrate on the present and the future, and on building that? Let me know in the comments below.

what is the secret to change where do
you focus your energy how much time do
you pay attention to what was versus
what might be you have to go back
thousands of years to Socrates and what
he had to say about this and I think
you’ll find some some useful information
we’ll do that on this episode of the vo
Heroes
podcast I’ve said millions of times we
work in the weirdest industry we working
in an industry where there’s no
guarantee of employment there’s no
guarantee of
success there’s no uh path that you can
take reliably over and over and over
again to achieve any sort of
accomplishments and we also spend a lot
of time because we don’t have those
things we spend a lot of time wondering
about our processes what we’ve done
whether it worked whether it didn’t work
whether it can work in the future and I
wonder if you’re familiar with uh
something that Socrates said he said the
secret of change is to focus all your
energy not on fighting the old but on
building the
new now I don’t think Socrates was an
actor I don’t think he was a voice
talent I think he was a philosopher and
a teacher and it it fits for us it’s
like how much time you spend worrying
about what you didn’t get as a job or
didn’t book or didn’t make the right
choices for a character or you narrated
a passage and you want to do it over
again maybe you bought your book on uh
on Audible and you listened and you
started cringing that you could have
done better things that you did that you
have no control over you are sad that
you can’t fix them well what about
instead of worrying about those things
because you can’t do anything about them
you cannot what if you just sort of set
everything aside just chalk it up to
experience chalk it up to doing less of
what doesn’t right secret of success do
more of what works less of what doesn’t
and really focus on building the future
on building the new as opposed to
fighting the
old is that something that you might
give yourself a little Post-It note a
little mental Post-It note or maybe a
physical one on your mirror in the
morning and say today I’m not going to
worry about what has already happened
I’m not going to fight the old I’m going
to build the
new I wonder what kind of change that
might make in your
life it has made all kinds of difference
to me it has made tremendously positive
changes for me you know I we we we want
our record to be spotless we want want
our our successes to be pristine and
clean and no problems and it just
doesn’t happen that way you know it just
doesn’t happen that way
so uh suggestion don’t worry about
what’s happened don’t even worry about
what will happen just go about building
the new as opposed to fighting the old
tell me what you think about this I’d
love to hear your comments is it easy
for you to do that is it not so easy for
you to do that
uh hit the like button while you’re at
it just mash it on your keyboard until
it’s just
unintelligible uh you can subscribe to

OR writer that you see dwelling on his
or her uh failures or past mistakes and
not really paying attention to what
could be what might be new H I’m David H
Lawrence of 17 thank you so much for
watching and for listening and I’ll see
you in the next episode of the vo Heroes

Not fighting the old, and instead, building the new, happens in some areas of my life but not others, and I’m not really sure why that is.
Thank you for this David.
I think the last few months I went through at the end of last year were a process of being able to let go of the past and truly embrace what is new and happening now. I cleared out some serious cobwebs and started embracing new ways to think, act, react and participate.
As Christopher mentioned before me, easier in some areas, not so in others. I think is all part of our growing process. Thinking about it (thanks for bringing this topic up) helps to continue in this journey, however long it takes.
