13200: What Jung Actually Said
Hey there, hero!
Famous quotes aren’t always famous. Or quotes. There are all kinds of websites that are dedicated to the things that are attributed to famous people, but that they never actually said.
In this episode, we’re going to correct one of those misquotes, and in the process, give ourselves a gift about our lives and our professions.
Once you’ve heard what Carl Jung actually said, does that make a difference for you? Let me know in the comments below.

here’s a moment of absolute
falsehood Carl Yung once said thinking
is difficult that’s why most people
judge actually he never said that but
what he did say is useful to us as
actors as voice Talent as writers as
performers let’s talk about that in this
episode of the vo Heroes podcast
I saw a whole list of quotes from people
who never said what those quotes say
they said uh Carl Yung has often been
quoted as saying thinking is difficult
that’s why most people judge and I think
that people say that because it’s short
it’s sweet it’s kind of in your face
it’s it’s potent what he actually said
was on page
46 of uh the book flying saucers a
modern myth of things seen in the skies
what he said was thinking is difficult
therefore let the herd pronounce
judgment you know either
way the sentiment is the same put some
put some effort into thinking about
things rather than making snap
judgments you look at something on the
face of it and without having any of the
supporting framework around it any of
the uh any of the uh nuances the little
little kind of details that make all the
difference because we live in such a
fast-paced world we make a snap judgment
on it we got other things to make
judgments on we’ve got other things to
think about we got lots of stuff to do
right and so you know we tend to be
rewarded as members of a modern society
that is so
fast-paced of being glib and being uh
very quick to make a decision to judge
as opposed to some
gentle thought some some slow and
deliberate consideration of things it’s
okay you can do that you have the
permission to do that you don’t have to
make those quick judgments this life is
not a game show where there’s a buzzer
you have to beat in usually usually you
can actually give some deliberation to
things as opposed to making these snap
judgments
so my my thought for you in this in this
little moment we have together is give
yourself a
gift do some more research do some more
thinking do a little bit more
considering don’t worry about being the
first one to make a decision and to do
so and to dig your heels in and be done
with it be open to potentially changing
that if you arrive at a decision allow
the thinking to occur you will be a
happier person your blood pressure will
be
lower uh you might even find that it’s
more beneficial to your life I don’t
know maybe what do you think thinking
versus
judgmental you
know um especially snap judgments let me
know in the comments below and what I
mean by that is uh either here wherever
you’re watching or listening to it uh
this episode or on vooh heroes.com
that’s where we we have these podcast
episodes live and the the comments and
the discussion is very calming very
soothing very deliberate people doing
some thinking and not just judging I
like that hit the like button while
you’re at it just smash it into Oblivion
uh you can subscribe to the channel you
can click the notification Bell you can
actor that you think might benefit from
the notion of thinking versus snap
judgments I’d love that I’m David H
Lawrence the 17th I thank you so much
for watching and for listening and I
will see you in the next episode of the
vo Heroes podcast
(from YouTube)
Thank you for this thought provoker, David.
I have often taken some heat for asking certain people to have time to consider things. My brother is a particularly intense, very opinionated person. The strength of his passion about some things actually did scare me growing up. He would be loud and in my face about whatever and I literally shut down, totally. I couldn’t think, I didn’t know what I thought and I could never respond to him in the moment.
So I would circle back to the conversation a few days (weeks,,,) later when he was calm and I had time to consider. I always want people who are like my brother to know what I am actually thinking/feeling about things. I am the youngest in my family and I got my share of the you’re- younger -what-could-you-possibly-know routine quite a bit. I have since made it a practice to voice considered responses. It may irk some people when I say I have to think about it, however, I like me better when I am me.
So many of the world’s problems stem from judgement without thought. It echoes and grows in destructive waves.
