Sometimes, when we finally acquire a skill, there may be a moment of uncertainty that we’ve actually, really, truly gained that expertise.
All of a sudden, we get good at something, and we can get nervous – that we’re missing something, that we’re not seeing the whole picture, that it can’t be this easy…are we OK?
I’ve got an explanation, and a permission slip to release the “what am I not seeing here??” feeling.

I want to talk to you today about a
moment of
unease
that you might have as you progress
through your performer career
um we talk about acquiring knowledge and
acquiring successes that give us more
confidence but it can cause some
discomfort something that I call the
discomfort of experience
and I want you to be aware of it and I
want you to recognize it for what it is
so let me talk to you about that in this
episode of the vo Heroes podcast

so often we get used to where we are in
our journey and what it feels like
to execute things as performers whether
it’s on camera or on mic as voice Talent
often we are trying to execute something
with more expertise we want to do things
better we want to do things uh more
confidently and with better results
and sometimes when we do that it can be
uncomfortable
imagine not understanding for example
how to address a microphone
not understanding how a microphone works
uh how you
um how you can get certain sounds out of
a microphone how things sound when
you’re not doing it correctly once you
acquire that expertise you use it to
your advantage
and at the very moment that you’re able
to do that with no problems falling out
of bed as if you were doing it your
whole life
there can be a moment of wait wait hold
on hold on a second I was nervous about
this before and now I’m not
do I not care as much as I did before
am I assuming that I’m an expert at this
is that dangerous we have all of these
questions in our head when we get better
at something
and in particular it happens when you’re
executing auditions or when you’re going
in to do work uh you think to yourself
when you get good at it it’s like wait
wait how come I’m not nervous about this
that’s the discomfort the unknowing of
whether or not you’re not paying
attention to something or you’re missing
something
allow yourself
to enjoy the moment
that you’re good you’re good you’ve
figured it out you understand that the
closer you get to a microphone the more
bass will be in your voice and you can
lower your voice and get a more intimate
sound
right
but that first time you do it you you’re
thinking yourself how come I’m not like
concerned about this how come I’m not
nervous about this how come I’m not
dealing with this in a way where I have
to question my my execution of this
right I call this the discomfort of
experience I’m now good at this
so I’m not nervous about it
huh what’s wrong with me right we always
think what am I missing what am I not
seeing here and I want to give you a
hall pass to say
maybe you just figured it out maybe
you’re good at it and now you don’t have
to worry about it now you can just sit
down do your work feel good about doing
your work feel good that you’ve prepared
for it feel good that you know how to
use your equipment whether it’s on
camera or on mic
and just have fun
I get that the first few times you’re
gonna think huh wait a minute this seems
too easy there’s something wrong here I
I I’ve missed some there’s something
there’s some big huge thing I’m gonna
look at or listen to what I did and I’m
gonna go oh I should have done and that
may happen
but that discomfort will go away
and it will just become a joy okay I
know how to do this I’m gonna do this
and now you can concentrate on the good
stuff the acting
the recreation of a realistic and
believable character or execution
of what you’re doing
so be aware that there is going to be
discomfort in experience and
these two things these these these also
shall pass this this too shall pass yeah
have you experienced that before have
you gotten to the point in your career
where you figured something out and then
you thought to yourself huh that doesn’t
make sense I need to figure out what I
missed there right let me know in the

I’ve struggled with over thinking things. Or trying to get rid of those
“mental gremlins” that pop up. Good advice from you.
Yes! Couldn’t agree more with this advice.
I’m pretty sure this has happened to me, but I can’t think of a specific example. It happens in other areas of life as well, outside acting.
