My original review and subsequent update are below.
So, I plugged this 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet adapter in and verified that it had negotiated 2.5 GbE uplink with my 10 GbE TrendNet switch. Then initiated a 8 GB file transfer of a single zip file over the network. The result? 35-45 MB/s.....what? For the record, that's way worse than Gigabit Ethernet which can do about 110 MB/s.
As first I thought that maybe the USB 3.0 port on my test computer was broken. So I tried with another computer. Same result. Didn't matter what 3.x USB port and didn't matter if I was connecting to my 10 GbE Trendnet switch or my 1 GbE Cisco switch.
My network file server is connected via a 10 GbE uplink and is running solid state storage. It will happily transfer large files at 112-113 MB/s over Gigabit Ethernet and 1 GB/s over 10 GbE. So clearly it isn't the bottleneck.
I will ask Amazon to send me a new one, hopefully it works better.
Update:
So the replacement adapter arrived and I had some time to do some more testing last night. Started fresh and had Windows delete all existing drivers and then installed the latest ones from Realtek's website.
The 40-45 MB/s speed problem went away and instead I started getting 8-12 MB/s when trying to download a file from my file server. Had a WTF!!! moment and plugged in the original adapter in and it behaved the same. 8-12 MB/s download.
Next, I tried uploading a file to the file server and it blazed away at a solid 270-280 MB/s. Tried downloading from the file server...and 8-12 MB/s again. Same behavior in both adapters.
The topology looks like this
Test Computer <--2.5 GbE link--> Trendnet TEG-7080ES switch <--10 GbE link--> FreeNAS File Server
So evidently there is a setting, or flow control problem, or something else that is wrong. At any rate it's beyond me at the moment.
I verified that the CableCreation 2.5GbE USB Adapters aren't at fault by configuring the Aquantia AQN-107 10GbE chip built into my motherboard to link at 2.5 Gbps and the same issue happened. Full speed upload and 20-22 MB/s download to/from the file server. Tried at 5 Gbps and the same thing too.
Interestingly this issue does not happen at Gigabit Ethernet speeds. It's a solid 112 MB/s up and down all day long.
PC <--1 GbE link--> TEG-7080ES switch <--10 GbE link--> File Server Good
PC <--2.5 GbE link--> TEG-7080ES switch <--10 GbE link--> File Server Slowest
PC <--5.0 GbE link--> TEG-7080ES switch <--10 GbE link--> File Server Slower
PC <--10 GbE link--> TEG-7080ES switch <--10 GbE link--> File Server SPEEED
TLDR:
Maybe I did have a driver issue before. However, I have been unable to re-create my original 45 MB/s problem. As best I can tell, the USB adapters actually work fine. More importantly, I discovered that my switch doesn't play nice with mixed multi-gigabit signals even though it's clearly advertised as NBASE-T compatible.
In my experience (I've tried nearly every adapter on the market), these Realtek-based adapters are least trouble out of the bunch. The price to performance ratio is unbeatable (twenty five bucks at time of writing) and they work great with my Netgear 10GbE switch (capable of 1/2.5/5/10). It'll saturate any spinning platter disk on the planet and give you USB-ish speeds for networked SSDs - I get about 275MB/s at best (theoretical maximum for this adapter spec is 312.5MB/s before network and usb overhead, so that seems just about right).
From personal experience, I can confirm the following as of March 2020 (using MacOS RTUNICv1.0.20 - Mojave driver):
* This adapter is capable of transferring at full 2500Mbps (verified with iperf3 and blackmagic disk speed test) on both Windows and MacOS systems.
* It does get hot and will throttle down if it overheats - I added a small thermal pad to dissipate the heat and that helps.
* Works fine through hubs without any performance loss (this is big for folks trying to integrate an existing single plug setup).
Top reviews from other countries
Now, I decided to try out this adapter and guess what? It worked excellent. No more disconnection and having to restart the laptop over losing progress. Must be something wrong with the Cable Matters one maybe poorly implemented drivers within. So far, I'm happy with this ethernet adapter so don't be afraid to try out different ones if you have disconnection and restart issues.
Pros:
- Easy and cheap way to add 2.5gbe to devices.
- works out of box for most applications.
- uses rtl8156 chipset, so it has FLOSS drivers.
- achieves full 2.5gbs connection.
Cons:
- openwrt does not support rtl8156 out of box, but it is simple enough to add driver.
